Door Speakers

Does anyone know what is the standard size door speaker in an 82 SC, i would like to replace mine, but i dont want to cut anything at all, i would like to be able to always put it back to how it came out of the factory.

Ideally using the original door speaker grilles with the new speakers.

Cheers.

Bit on the small size for a woofer I think he means.

I am running 16cm Kefs and they fit a treat though they are not in the car at the mo - developments... Try to get a driver with a decent motor assembly (i.e. big basket/magnet) - cast baskets best way to go for decent bottom end with no sub. You'll also want to make sure the speaker is well-fixed to the trim panel but preferably also to the door frame, and the door 'enclosure' is as airtight as you can get it for best results, regardless of whether you are running the speakers straight from the head or via an amp.

Whatever speakers you fit, as long as you are not making big door mods the finished project will not have a negative effect on value, as most cars have been through a few sets of speakers since they were new, so don't get too worried if you have to trim a few bits back. Use new grilles too - tidy grilles look good and are usually matched to the speakers from a fitting point of view.

Also remember that the inside of a911 door was designed to get wet, mine had plastic covers one the top of the magnets and cone.

I fitted some Genesis units to my car with a shaped wooden spacer sitting between the door trim and door structure. The fixing screws for the speaker pass through the trim and spacer into the door itself so the speaker is firmly attached to the door structure. I put Dynamat over as much of the door as I coule get to, along with a dose of Waxoyl for good measure (whilst I was in there!). As an added bonus I found that the tweeter units were a really snug fit in the (optional)factory tweeter mounts in my car (once I have carefully removed the Genesis tweeter units from their own mountings). So the installation looks factory. I did have to slightly enlarge the hole in the trim panel but this was easily done (and it was only a small amount of enlargement).

Sounds great Chris, any pics? How do you rate the Genesis units and what are you using to drive them? I have a Genesis four channel working my stuff, peerless amps, absolutely gorgeous [;)].

Hi John

I'll try to organise some pics, but they won't show much. Didn't take any pics when I did the installation and don't want to pull it aprt now[;)]

At the moment I'm just using a new Alpine head unit (can't remember the number) to drive them. I've also replaced the rear loudspeakers with some JL Audio units. Most people told me not to bother with the rear speakers but I'm pleased that I did change them. I'd like to spring for a Genesis amp, but frankly I hardly use the set up as it is. I only use the car for fun and that usually means listening to the orchestra 'out back'[:)]

I rate the Genesis speakers very highly. I went for (as I recall) the 'mid' range (£circa £250). I did hear the top range (£500) at the time which sounded simply magnificent, but would have been a total waste in the 911. (In any event there was simply no way I was going to spend £500 on some speakers for the car - I had a hard enough time convincing myself that the ones I bought were worth it!).

Infinity Reference Series are nice at around £120 IIRC for 5.25s - mine have a separate tweeter and crossover but they may do an all in one. If I did it again, I would put in 6 inch speakers as most will fit just fine with a little trimming (as evidenced by John's over 6 inch Kefs) and they provide a little extra kick.

Then again, I can't really hear anything unless I am at idle so why bother [:)]
