Door trim removal

JB 3.2

New member
Following on from an earlier thread, I'm in the process of replacing the front speakers. Although I've managed to remove the old speaker, it would be easier to work on the aperture with the door map pocket removed. According to my Bentley manual,, its just a case of removing six screws which I've done but the pocket won't release from the door handle area. Do I have to remove the handle actuating rods, or can the pocket be removed without?

The second question concerns speaker size, the one that came out appears to be 5" diameter, but according to the archives 5.25" or even 6" should fit without modification has anyone fitted larger speakers recently? if so did they fit straight in or did you have to remove any of the door card?

As always thanks for your assistance.

Regards.....JB

I have removed the pockets on mine to fix them - once the screws were removed a slight tug should be enough to remove it. The screws are tiny and easily hidden, so make sure all of them are out before using any pressure.

With regard to the larger speakers I have wind up windows on mine (a CS) and although the previous owner made some very well thought out modifications / improvements, having larger speakers does make it difficult to wind the windows up and down ! Once the door pockets are removed the door cover can be pulled away from the door slightly to enable you to cut a larger hole.

I've fitted larger speakers to my 88 - 6.25 inch I think. Had to slightly enlarge the door card hole, but easily done and the finished results looks very 'factory'.

I recently fitted some 5 1/4 audiobahn 2 way speakers. It was a very simple installation in which I removed the door bin and door card (I had to cut a hole for the tweeter).
In order to fully remove the door card, you must unclip the door rod from the handle and then undo the 2 screws that are hiding behind the handle. Once you are confident you have undone all the screws, the door card will clip out of the plastic clips and come free.

Good luck

Greetings
Apart from the screws that around the edge of the pocket there is also one inside!
If you lift the arm rest and look at the back of the door pull area there is one in the middle at the top, once that is undone the pocket falls off[:)]
17cm speakers, which are now the european standard size, will fit....... a piece of cake. Even the hole in the metal work is the correct size to allow the basket of the speaker to go through but still be able fix the mounting screws through the metal itself, giving you a more solid speaker and sound[:D]
Happy listening

Thank you all for your helpfull comments, I have now managed to remove the door map pocket without breaking anything.

The right hand speaker was split, and it also appears the right hand front channel on the stereo is not working either, so as usual one simple job becomes more involvrd than first expected.

cheers...JB

While you are in there, try to line as much of the inside of the outer door skin as you can reach with Dynamat. It is well worth the effort.

Chris,
Could you enlighten me on the benefits of Dynamat. At the moment there appears to be a lot of high density rubber material in the bottom of the door and an enclosure around the speaker.

Also can you or anyone else enlighten me on whether to buy single speakers and leave the existing tweeters in place or do I buy the speakers which appear to have a built in tweeter cone (I think they are called two-way speakers.

Finally as there don't appear to be any events in the near future where I can look at other 3.2's would anyone care to post a picture of there 'improved' speaker set up for us to see?

Regards...JB

Hi JB,
My door speakers and rear shelf speakers had seen better days on my 3.2, I wanted to keep the original look . Once I had removed door and rear speaker I took them to my local ICE specialist explained what I wanted and he was able to advice me and give me a couple of options. Iended up with Sony units having only to snip a couple of mm's from the speaker retaining slots to fit them in to the original speaker surrounds and covers.
regards..Gwyn.

This really depends on what you want the end result to be like. Is it just a speaker upgrade or do you intend to upgrade with an amp at the same time?
IMHO you can get a reasonable front speaker that will do a job for you for about £40, however if you double your budget you will get a superior sound quality and a deeper bass range.

I would opt for the 2 way component speakers (cone and tweeter are separate) - they do give a crisper sound

Whilst you are in there it would be worth upgrading the cable to proper audio cable. Check your cross overs which I think are tucked away in the door pocket somewhere. Infinity do some nice speakers which fit, you pays your money.

Baz,

Thank you for your advice, I will certainly invest in some decent speakers and will be checking the cross-overs. As to the cable, I feel that may be a step to far, I have tried different audio cables on my home hi fi and failed to notice any appreciable difference.
