Double DIN head units

Have been thinking for a while that when I come to do the interior of my car I would ditch the cubby beneath the radio/stereo slot and fit a double DIN head unit to fill the entire space. Today I took my centre console out to facilitate fitting the rubber gaiter to the transmission tunnel and with the console out on the bench, it looks pretty simple to modify it to accept the double height unit.

So now I'm thinking to do this job now while the console is out and it will be one less thing to do later.

Anyone already done this? Any pitfalls to be aware of?

I suspect that by cutting the frame divider out that splits the cubby hole from the HU should allow a Double DIN item to fit in place.

However, the depth may present a problem IMO. The wiring of a double DIN HU (with ISO sockets) is no different to that of many new single DIN items.

Search on renn list there are a couple of threads about this

Easy to do but looks OK but a very modern look

It would seem a relatively simple process with many possibilities but could be problematic in use because of glare.

Have you thought of a motorised screen coming from a single unit as an option? This would then give you control over the angle of the screen and will disappear when not in use - better security, standard look etc.

I guess one issue with the single DIN flip out screens is that many of them lack the features or support which many modern Double DINs have (especially with the advent of these modern App Radios on the market). That is unless one has very deep pockets for one of Becker's new offerings.

The glare is a very good point with the angle of the Porsche HU. Even with my single item glare can be a issue (it does have a smooth front mind you).

Thanks for the comments chaps. I hadn't even considered the possibility of glare so will have to give that some thought if I decide to go ahead. I suppose there is probably a self adhesive film meant for laptops/tablets etc that is "anti-glare"?

Think I will get some dimensions of the HU's I am considering and mock them up in cardboard to see if they fit the recess. If I'm going to do this, I want it to look as if it was meant to be, and not jutting out or at a funny angle or anything.

Youll need a very shallow bottom, half as the space has a DIN aperture but nothing like spec depth.
