Double Din Stereo

I am about to replace my single din stereo with a double Din Pioneer Nav unit. As I have blown all my money (and more) on the unit itself...I have to fit it myself. Are there any additional trim pieces from Porsche that I need to replace/renew or can the existing single din slot be modified to accomodtae a double din unit in the slots at the top of the contral console. Ive already moved the climate control to the lower panel.....Ive found loads of posts on different forums, but no definitive answer or instructions on fabricating my own surround as I believe the gap is slightly larger than double din size - and a gap will look awful I think
thanks for advice

I thought that the slim cup holder from a facelift 996 will fit but don't know what year car you are playing with.

There was a good post recently about someone that fitted a Pioneer double din unit which looked great.

I have the AVIC-HD1BT in my 996. It all depends on the age of your car as to what trim you need (or can get).

If it is a facelift car with cupholders, then the opening is double-din size. If you have a conventional radio with the aircon controls above, then you need to move the aircon down to the lower position. There is a trim piece fro this, which costs about £2.50. Once the radio and aircon controls have been removed, you will have to cut the separating bar to give you a double-din opening. There are some really good photos and 'how to' here:

If you have a pre-facelift car (like mine) there are two alternatives. You can buy the complete surround piece for the PCM1 (about £65) which will give you a perfect double-din size opening. Alternatively, you can use the method above, but it will give you a taller opening than double-din by about 1/2". That's what I ended up with, so I cut up the old aircon surround to make a filler piece at the top. You've seen the photos here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/fb.asp?m=266524
