DPW fitting virgin to expert in 36 hours.

8 am yesterday morning I knew nothing of the wonders of fitting DPWs. Following Pauls expert tuition Saturday at 8pm this evening I had mine off and re-fitted within 60 minutes - and I've got the burn marks on my arms to prove it.

If anyone hasn't fitted their TiAL yet it is very, very important to tighten the bolts between the TiAL and its backing plates. Not having a convenient 6mm allen key available to get to all the bolts is no excuse []

So it was that when arriving at Cornbury Hse this morning, for the Cotswold rally, I thought "Wastegate seems to be blowing a bit. Anybody got a 6mm allen key?" Nobody had so I carried on. By the end of the day the car was sounding like Ricks - but not in a good way.

On arriving home I reached under the car, with the engine running to feel where the leak was. I promptly tweeked the 8 No allen bolts although they all seemed as tight as they could go. Started it up again and still BKE sounded like a tractor. I jacked him up for a closer look - with blocks under the front wheels for safety, only to find TiAL flopping about on one of its mounting plates having ejected one of the bolts [].

With no option but to remove the damn thing, off it came. A replacement bolt was found, and shortened, and the whole lot re-assembled. All done and put to bed by 9:30pm.

Re-test unfortunately shows that it is still blowing a little from cold as the gasket was less than perfect, having been flopping about hanging on one bolt between the mounting faces. This may stop when it gets hot, or fills with crud. Perhaps.

Either way I'm not best pleased with SFR as - if supplying a component assembled it should be assembled not semi assembled so you have to remount it when it falls to pieces. []

Hi John,
Your not having much luck at the moment - hope it turns around soon. My gaskets were poorly aligned so I had the plates off mine and re-attached lucky I guess looking back.

You're not wrong, thanks Tony. It is all a learning experience though.

I have discovered that, if you put a 6mm spanner on the allen key you can reach in and tighten the TiAL bolts with it in place - might be worth knowing for anyone else who may have the same problem.

I've e-mailed Tim at SFR letting him know my problem and requested a new set of gaskets and bolts. While on the case I'm also going to interogate PET to get new fixings and gaskets for the exhaust sections.

Didn't I say on Friday "If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is" [8|]
