Drain plugs

Hi,

Being the happy newbie 944 owner that I am, I thought great, sunny weekend, perfect day to fully clean carpets and finally get rid of the funk of the rather smelly previous owner. The beige carpets are almost beige and the car is smelling much better, however I took out all of the boot coverings, spare wheel ect to give it a wash and dry, and clear the muck, however I was blinded by the daylight that was coming from the bottom of my car! basically there are fours holes where the spare wheel is, I presume these are drain holes, but no sign of any plugs, I just want to confirm that these holes are supposed to be plugged, before I go to a dealer and ask for plugs.

Kind Regards

Yes there should be 4 rubber plugs there about 2 inches or so. I saw them last week when i sorted my jack handle which come loose and rattled around. Try the dearler I'm sure there cheap.
There should be a rubber bung at the bottom of the spear wheel well which lets water out kinda like a teet thingy and in the bottom of the storage compratments in the rear arches.

That does make sense!

I will order some, mind you I was quite pleased that there was not actually a great deal of water, I have a little rust in the off-side arch on the inside which I will sort out, but generally it is all pretty solid, thankyou Germans for Glavanised body work!

Mind you I am pretty please with how my little 944 is shaping up, but I need to have the doors resprayed, and also a good trimmer to sort out some tears, can anybody recomend any in the Essex area?

Have a look in 911 & Porsche World and GT Purely Porsche, theres lots of companie's that advertise trimming and spraying in there. What 944 do you have? Any Pics?

Well originally me and my pops bought it jointly he needed something for work, as his car was costing far too much in petrol, seriously he was getting about 6 miles per gallon!

Anyway he was looking at MR2's which are pretty naff so after much convincing, we agreed to joint buy a 944, in order for me to buy it off him and then he can what the hell he wants, however he actually really liked the 944 so he is now looking around for a 928/968 he wants to stick with the whole water cooled, gearbox in the boot thing!

Anyway, my little 944 is just your basic 2.5 8v, I did a lot of reading before hand, and basically wanted something that I could afford to run, so alas I was unable to realistically afford a 2.7/ 2.5 Turbo, or 3.0. But being 25 it is kinda cool that I own a Porsche, as well as a work car.

We got a cracking price on it though just before Xmas, 110k on the clock, full Porsche history, reasonably tidy, bought by someone that could not afford to run it that needed the money for christmas, cash deal of ÂŁ2300!

Knowing that she was a little tired, she took a trip to AutoStrausse for two weeks at a health farm after having a major load of work done, New belts, inc balancing, brakes, refurb, gear box refurb, and ÂŁ1400 later we had a mechanically sound Porsche for ÂŁ3700!

So just need to tidy the paintwork a little, possible respray, and a couple of inside panels replaced she should be good for another 100k.

Mind you for a 2.5 she has an outstanding amount of mid range torque, and certainly the sublime handling is better than I thought and heard.

Only downside, is that she is Guards Red, and I kinda wanted white, but I have read to stay away from white ones, why is that?

The only reason to stay away from white is that it is deeply unfashionable nowadays. 5 years time white will be fine, sliver will be naff and some other colour will be the one every second car is painted.

Erm, It was a dry foam cleaner by Turtle Wax, the one with a brush on the lid,

It is not bad stuff, However I find that most carpet cleaners tend to make the carpet attract dirt after you clean them. But they were in such a state with stains, ciggerette burns, and rather smelly, I had to do a temporary fix. I am actually tempted to hire one of the carpet cleaners you get from Sainsburys, the big industrial ones, I am hoping that I can get the carpets clean I may not have to replace them which I forsee as being firstly very expensive, and secondly I doubt that any interior coach works would be able to get the same carpet with the piping. However after the proper clean I will of course post the results.

I have to say that I really like white cars, and I think it is more of a timeless colour, but I guess it is horses for courses.

I think the 944 (and the "impact bumper" 911) suit white and at least you get early warning if it's rusting as it shows through the white paint long before other colours. One of my 944s was white but that was 9 years ao when white was still quite fashionable. Shallow? Moi?

Kel,
Your car sounds nice espacially for that price! Well you beat me into Porsche ownership, i was 26. Buy your Dad this months 911 & Porsche World as there's the essential 968 buyers guide. I almost bourght a 928 instead but it got sold to a higher bider. Polished guards red it the best colour (oops shouldn't of written that).[;)]

Of course we are shallow, we own a Porsche! I love driving, I love driving fast, I love posing, and I love that for 10K + I could buy a new Ford Focus, but instead I have so much more of a car for less than half of that! Which gets 100% more looks!

Thanks,

As soon as I figure out how to do it, I will of course post some pictures, I am doing a bit of a photo diary of the car, and how it is developing,

Well you beat me into Porsche ownership, i was 26

I bought my first Porsche as a 26th birthday present to myself, but mine was one with the engine at the wrong end. I'm now on nuber 6, although 7 has been and gone while I've had that one.

Never had a red one though [8D]

Arnt the ones with the engine in the boot the more expensive ones?!!!! that is super flashy! I have to say, that I have always preferred the shape of the 944, I think that at the time of designing it Porsche were thinking pretty out of the box, and it is/was totally a different shape of car to anything at the time and even now. It is crazy but even when At 300zx meetings with my dad, and track days, people with far faster, and more flashier cars often ask me about my humble 944, it seems that everyone that has owned one and has something else now loves them and most other people would at least like to have a go in one!

So you fitted spacers then. Does it make any difference to the drive? And I don't mean is there a bigger gap between the tyre marks in the chuckies.

Ooh you've got eagle eyes. [;)]

15mm "proper" spacers on the rear, and simple 7mm shims on the front.

It's pretty difficult to say whether / how much they affected the handling and response as I was suffering such nasty tramlining at the time (pre 968 front arm bushes). The smidge extra on the front didn't seem to make any difference (I was obviously nervous that shims would accentuate it).

Can't really comment on any balance change either as I was rather corner shy when it was misbehaving. [:(]

Yeah they are a huge visual improvement.

(Fen in "white car looks good" post shocker...... readawlabaaadit). [;)]
