Draining the coolant

I am planning on draining out the coolant as part of taking the thing apart.

Any hints and tips to doing this without ending up stood in a pool of anti freeze would be gratefully received [:D]

Without removing the batwing the end result will always be 'a large pool' and even if you take the time to remove it you'll probably end up with a 'not so large pool' [:'(]

There's a drain plug at the bottom of the RH side of the rad as you look at the car, so remove that and the tank cap and allow to drain, it will take a while...

Are you removing the water pump and or cylinder head? If yes to the latter remove the water pump first to empty the block; I'm not aware of a drain plug so in my case this resulted in a large pool.

I recommend a large drain pan as you'll probably end up with drips and runs from several different points as it drains.

HTH!

If it's not been out in a while then the plastic radiator drain plug has a habit of snapping - ask me how I know!

Either buy a spare first (£4 ish from OPC) or pull the hose at the other end of the radiator off and let it drain that way.

On the 944 block there is a coolant drain plug under the inlet manifold, which allegedly allows you drain the coolant from the block and head before service work.

IMHO - I wouldn't bother trying to either locate it or undo it, just stick with the rad coolant plug or pulling the lower hose [:)]

If you want to drain down a little further there is a drain plug under the the exhaust manifold towards the rear, well there is on a turbo so presume yours is the same. [:)]
