Dreaded RMS ?

Just backed the car out of garage to clean it and found a large patch of oil under rear nearside corner - it hasnt been used for 3 weeks - cleaned car and took it for a run and discovered a steady drip of oil from the same place when I put it back into the garage. Although the car is 5 years old it has only done 16000 miles and has been serviced at OPCs (last service was a 24000 done in 12/07 at 13000 miles. I dont have an extended warranty. Assuming it is RMS (and you guys will know better than me by the symptoms), what is the likely cost at agood Indi or OPC, and is there any chance of the OPC being open to suggestions re a contribution ? Any useful comments would be appreciated.

Hi Chris,

If it's under the nearside it's unlikely to be RMS.

RMS is normally under the centre, about where the gearbox and engine meet.

How large was the patch of oil? I take it the oil level gauge/dipstick shows you haven't lost too much?

RMS leak is more central and is usually a sweat or weep initially, that said it could be leaking elsewhere and running to a low point before dripping onto the floor.

OPC repair is about £700 from memory but given how quiet they are currently may match what an indie will charge.

The leak seems to be coming from just behind about where the nearside exhust pipe is situated - havent got underneath to check. What made me think it was RMS was that when the car had a 111 point check at OPC (Cambridge) about 14months ago they said there was a very slight leak at the RMS but not to do anything about it until it got worse - I think that time has now come !
Probably worth ringing the OPC to get an opinion - as you say Ash, they are not exactly overburdened with work these days !

I'd ring an Indy for a cheaper opinion! [:)]

I'd get some more miles on it as well!

If you do get underneath this is what it will look like at the join of the engine and gearbox.

If it's leaking from the lower left corner, look for a prominent housing at the bottom in that part of the engine with what appears to be a large nut on the end of it. If it's coming from there, it could well be the gasket around the timing chain tensioner. Mine had this a few years ago. An occasional drip when cold and a steady drip when hot. If so, it's a "20p" part. Whatever you do, don't go a main dealer as they'll want to take the engine out (no joke). Mine was fixed by my specialist in half an hour for the cost of a bit of lost oil and the new gasket. Sum total was less than £50.
 
Good news guys ! Took the car to an 'Indi' this morning and it was exactly as you said John - the aluminium washer at the big oil drain plug has failed - I will lose the rest of the oil when it is replaced but it was due an oil change anyway.
Got to look at the underside when it was on the lift, and the RMS is sweating a bit, but they said it was probably good for another 10000 miles yet, by which time the clutch will need changing. Apparently if the RMS has really gone, you feel the clutch slipping.
