Drive event at Mira

Has anyone been on one of these drive events at Mira through the Porsche Dealerships ?
I am booked on one Friday 27th April, I just wondered what to expect ?
It is in a Cayman S as the Boxster S one was in January and I fancied a dry track.

It was really useful. The trainer concentrated on the wet test area as there were a load of caravans being tested around the main track (nightmare). They had three rings with different surfaces one like sheet ice, another like loose snow and a normal wet tarmac situation. First go round with PSM on which gave the car about a 5% licence for the back end to slide before the PSM kicks in. The PSM takes control of everything from brakes to accelerator I didn't realise it was so good.
We then turned the PSM off - great fun !2nd gear going 45 degrees sideways balancing the steering with the amount of power on foot. (first three atempts were 360 degree donuts !).
Definately worth the trip to Mira if you get offered it through your dealer.

I've been on these different wet surfaces at MIRA too. They simulate wet tarmac, snow and ice. The facility really helps to understand how good PSM is. And of course rather than 360 donuts the challenge is to power slide round the whole circle on each surface! And no I didn't do it; only managed about 270 before either spinning or the car recovering again.

I too, have just received an invite to a driving experieince at Mira and have it booked for Monday 21st May. Sounds great - especially the skid pan stuff which is something you never really get to try until it's for real and in your own car []

Do you also get drives on some of the other test tracks they have down there? This is my first time on a Porsche driving experience so any futher info or tips, (like how to avoid 360 donuts) would be welcome.

Thanks for that, Mark. I'm really looking forward to the day and want to get as much out of it in terms of improving my on-road driving skills/ability in more extreme situations as possible. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi,
I thought the Boxster was the only model which didn't include a driving experience with the price?
Or is this something your paying extra for?I'm collecting a 987 S in june

I think this is someting that's been aimed at 986 owners in an attempt the sell the virutes of the 987 and get them to buy one. The offer, (which is free), was for a 24 hour test drive or a driving experience. I don't think it's the same as the driving experience that comes when you buy a 997.

Peter,

Yes you are right the Boxster is the only one that doesn't include the driving experience. Mine was a sweetener to try and get me to use the OPC for future business/ service etc.

Well, I did my Porsche driving experience at Mira yesterday afternoon and it was great. Highly recommended if you get the chance to do it. Slightly dissappointed that we didn't get to try the skid pan, as our group used the "Dunlop handling circuit" instead, which consists of several constant radius corners and long straight for testing braking performance. But still a brilliant time doing the the things you've always wanted to do in a Boxster, but were afraid to try [;)]

We each got to try a 987 Boxster and a 987 Boxster S, both with optional 19" wheels and the latter with ceramic brakes. The grip and handling of both cars is amazing when you push them hard, but the "S" was noticeably taughter and more settled in the bends, even to an average driver like myself.

I'm still not 100% sold on the ceramic brakes though. On the track, braking as hard as possible from 80mph, they were marginally better than the standard steel disks. But on the road, travelling to and from Mira from the hotel where we met, I couldn't really tell the difference - they did look good though.

Trickiest part of the day? The drive back to the hotel from Mira. Sweeping country roads, top down and having to stick to speed limits [:(]
