Driver side external door handle failure

[8|] 996 cabrio 1999. Got into car fine this morning, went to go out midday and the driver side external pull handle doesn't open door, I am able to get in via passenger door and open from the inside. The lifting the handle does actuate the window release lowering approx 15 mm's out of gutter. Does anyone have any ideas/help. Have tried unlocking locking several times both via electronic key fob and manually key in lock to no avail.

It's probably the mechanism in the door handle unit. This unit also contains the switches for the window drop, lock/unlock, and for the alarm circuit. Not hugely expensive (I had a switch go on mine and the car would only emergency lock), but a total pain in the *rse to get to it.
 
Looks like I've now got a job for the weekend, do you have any tips for removing the door panel. Is it just a series of bayonet clips?? i.e. leverage around the edge of the door panel. I note there is a screw fastener behind the door latche on the inside, are there any hidden fasteners??
 
I have the extract from the workshop manual that shows the door trim removal. It's a pdf file of about 1.1Mb. If you email me I'll attach it to a reply.
