drivers door (outside) doesnt work

hi all. went to get in the car before and the drivers door handle doesnt open the car. can open the passenger side and get the door to open by pulling the latch from the inside on the drivers side. locks ok with the fob and the key, but the drivers outside door handle doesnt operate the latch. what can this be? something bust or come away? all advices of fix welcome.

The handles can get gunked up with dirt which can also cause this problem (have had it on mine). Before attempting anything that involves any sort of dismantling, try giving it a good old squirt with WD40 and giving it a wiggle. May not be this but worth a try.
 
If you do need to start removing things then there is a great guide on door handles on the Clarks Garage site, just go to http://www.clarks-garage.com/ then Garage Shop Manual and look under D for Door handle removal - step by step photos. Good luck
 
They do break the main casting on one of the pivots which is a pain to see without a strip down.

But as has been said the most common problem is just gunmmed up!
