drivers mirror slight problem advice please

LO all, I just got my car back from a 'specialist' and as I was driving it home I notice that the drivers mirror will no longer adjust properly. Ther motor is working and does move the mirror up and down but it wont adjust down far enough to see behind properly ( it can tbe pushed down either ). It is as if something maybe has come off inside or it has had a knock ?

Is it easy to get in to the mirror , do I have to take the door panel off and mirror off the car body etc or can I some how get the surround off and get in that way if you see what I mean.

Cheers Mas

The mirror is held in place by a rotating ring on the back - to rotate the ring tilt the mirror downwards, i.e. top coming outwards towards you, as far as possible then carefully insert a flat bladed screwdriver into the gap at an angle pointing towards the ground. You should be able to use the tip of the screwdriver to engage the slot in the ring and turn the ring a small amount - be warned - at this point the glass will want to drop away from the housing!!!
I did it in the reverse manner - my mirror wasn't properly latched and kept dropping off with only the heater element wiring stopping it from parting company with housing. Freeing the ring up with WD allowed me to to turn it sufficiently to properly lock.
A little WD before hand might help it to turn.

Sorry if that's not a very good description but you'll see what I mean if you try it.
Let me know how you get on...

The mirror connetcs to the motors by small plastic drives which rack in and out to control mirror movement. it is quite possible that one of them has snapped. I had no movement at all and had to replace them. I ended up just putting a complete new motor and drive assy in. Thanks once again Alasdair [:)]

I am sure they have a little hole in the bottom to do as Steve says. Also removing the mirror case from the base is easy, putting it back togather is a right pain, a job that nearly sent me mad!!

I downloaded the manuals ages ago from the web to keep , but its nearly impossible to find smaller itens in the hundeds of pages. Today I went back on the site via your link and see that the online version is searchable ! one to remember for me there []

Anyway I cant start this today as im waiting to be 'allowed' to take my car back to Carrera Engineering for the third time for him to have his 3rd attempt in a week at sorting my Oil Pressure Sender. I Dont want to drive there with no mirror at all.

As soon as I get the car back and hopefuly with a working oil pressure guage I will give this a go and report back ( or scream help)

Cheers Mas

It seems th car wont go in till tomorrow morning so im having a go at the mirror , on having a look I see that someone has stuck a mirror glass over the old one and sealent round it so it isnt obvious ! so I'll need a new drivers side glass proper for starters [&o]

Am I looking at it right , I dont want to break anything. On an 87 car you dont put the screwdriver in between the glass and the housing I.E just behind the glass , the hole they refer to is it the one underneath the plastic housing , quite a fair sized hole in the housing itself. I ask as I can see what looks like the locking ring behind the glass but the manual does NOT describe putting the screwdriver in there to unlock it.

Mas

Just to add here your meant to insert a screwdriver into the small screwdriver hole in the bottom of the mirror case to slide the catch and release the mirror but its quite hard if you haven't done it before.

The only thing id say is don't force anything! The mirror glass should drop out very easily when the catch is released correctly. No force is required.
