Drivers Seat Electrics Problem

For some unknown reason the front (of the 2) switch on my drivers side seat blows the 30 amp fuse. It's the button that lifts and lowers the front of the seat squab. The other switch, plus both switches on the passenger seat, operate properly and without blowing the fuse.

I see from other posts on here that freeing the seat is just 4 allen key headed bolts - apparently quite easy to get out but a pig to get back in.

Before I start trying to lift the seat and see if there's any obvious reason why the fuse is blowing, are there any tips from those who have done this - and any gremlins lurking in wait?!!

Chris.
Actually there are 6 allen key bolts. 2 at the front + 4 at the rear..
They are pretty easy to get at...
Its the CS buckets that can be a pig to do....
I dont think there are any possible problems lurking.. just undoo the bolts , remove the wiring harness + the seat should just lift out. But they are heavy....

Thanks Dave - especially for the warning about the weight, how did you guess I've got a dodgy back!

I'm wondering if I'll see any obvious reason why touching the front switch immediately blows the 30 amp fuse - knowing me and things electrical the answer is a resounding no! At least the fuse is only for the electric seats so doesn't take out anything else. I like the attention to detail in the fuse box (first time I've had to open it!) - not only a very clear diagram on the inside of the lid, but also a little tool to pull and replace the blade fuses! Also nice and easy to get at.

Right, decision time - do I pull the seat now or wait until after the "show and shine" next Sunday...

All things being equal,it points to a short circuit in;-`1/the switch---2/the wiring---3/the seat motor---3/ being the likely choice.
Cheers,
Colin.

Thanks Colin and Dave - with your help, problem fixed. It was a short - one of the 2 wires onto the motor had pulled out of the connector and was shorting onto the seat frame. Once I'd removed the 6 bolts I was able to tip the seat over to get at the underside, and there was just enough slack (but only just!!) to cut the insulation back 1/8"" and re-install the connector and insulating boot. Also gave me a chance to hoover the areas you can't reach when the seat is in place! Handy that it's live with ignition off - I was able to test it and see everything working before putting the seat back.

Needed the 6mm allan key and my 1/4 drive ratchet handle to free the bolts, bit of a fiddle getting them back in and lined up (first time I had the main wiring bundle wrong side, so seat would not slide properly - my own fault, I'd moved it so I could tip the seat over!).

So, a good day - fixed the missing sound from the rear offside speaker (bad connection at radio end, nothing wrong with speaker) and the electric seat. Think I've earned a beer today!

Thanks again guys.

Funnily enough, that was the first question my wife asked as well! Would you believe I found a whole 1p under my seat - but a load of old car park tickets and sweets under hers. Also found the plastic cover that goes across the front of the seat motors under the back of her seat - and the 2 securing screws floating loose on the floor.

Currently swearing and cursing swirl marks. Paint was absolutely flat when I first bought her, but 2 years later the OPC where I bought her (or their screen replacement subbie) put a machine on her - and I now know I've compounded the problem over the years using a cellulose sponge, AG silicone blade and chamois to wash her. Recently switched to a merino wash mitt and microfibre, been slaving with AG bodyshop restorer, SwirlX, Meguiars Deep Crystal Stage 1 and loads of elbow grease, it's slowly improving. If you'd like a better look at her, look at this month's competition on www.theultimatetfinish.co.uk - prize is £100 of detailing products, there's 2 Porsches in this month but we're being outvoted by a BMW (Mods - apologies for bad language!). Maybe I should post about this - they're a good and hel;pful supplier of cleaning stuff, very cheap next day courier delivery, based at Brands Hatch - and maybe some members would support the 2 Porsches so one of us wins this month's prize!

It seemed to make sense to piggy-back this thread...

The heated seat on the drivers side hasn't worked for a good while - is there anything obvious I could look at before I get a leccy involved at the cost of $$$.

Cheers guys!
