drivers window

Just a quick question for you all. I have a dead drivers window motor and just wondered how easy/difficult these are to replace for a novice?

I've never done a window motor before but you can get inside the door easily enough. the interior trim comes off with a phillips screwdriver. Getting the lever to open the door off was a bit fiddly - i used a haynes manual but it might be on clarkes garage or summit aswell.

I didn't see the window motor when i was in mine. but once you're that far in how hard can it be ?

(nb - i take no responsibility for use of the famous last words "how hard can it be". If anyone else has done this then listen to them)
 
Thanks. I won't hold you to anything. Where is the best/cheapest place to buy a replacement motor, any ideas?

Search - I did a regulator removal guide about April last year. I'd do it for you but I'm on dial-up and I can't take the pain [:mad:]
 
On a scale of 1-10 for mechanics , I rank about a 1 but I managed to replace both window motors/regulators on my S2 about 6 months ago , it took me in total about 4 hrs [:)] the only tricky bit I found was getting the regulator back inside the door panel.

I got the motors from Porsch-Apart ( Tel 07000 924 944 ) ( one new , one reconditioned ) and the regulators ( reconditioned ) from Club Autosport Ltd ( 01384 410879 ) new motor was £70 , re conditioned / used £30 and the regulators where £35 each - plus add vat.

If I can fit them then quite frankly anybody can.

cheers chaps. This is probably a really stupid question but what is a regulator? The guy at the garage never mentioned this part only said the motor has gone, as I said I am a novice!
 
I've done this job on my old 924 and it is quite time consuming - be careful of the window glass if you take the motor and the "scissor" mechanism out in case it drops and breaks.
One thing to remember - it might not be the motor that's gone - it could also be the switch on the door card - inside the old 944/924's there is a simple spring/ball bearing mechanism that wears and so completely packs up.
Also When the window motor is removed it can be separated into two sections by uncrewing, allowing the nylon spindle inside to be re-greased - i've fixed a supposed "broken" one by doing this before.
Also grease up the window runners and the actual "scissor" mechanism as this can start to seize up as well over time.
If it is the window motor that's knackered i think all the 924's/944's share the same motor.Unless anyone knows different.

Check fuses etc first and regulator action etc etc

I understand that the regulators on these cars need maintenance/greasing etc as do the window guides. It wont take much to blow a fuse if the motors capacity is overcome by friction/resistance as the mechanism siezes over time.

Regulator is the proper name for the "scissor part". I imagine it would be much easier to take it out and split the motor off it than to try to get the motor off inside the door.
 
I've been fitting a better resprayed drivers side door to my 944 cab this afternoon so i've taken the opportunity to clean up and re-grease the window motor and scissor mechanism - for anyone who hasn't seen one here's a link to the pics i've taken (apologies for the quality). http://img78.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cabmotor2jw.jpg
The motor can't be removed without taking out the scissor mechanism (at least i couldn't) and the motors connected to the regulator by 3 nuts and a philips screw.This link shows the spindle within the motor which can be re-greased (T-20 required to unscrew the 2 screws)
