drivers wiper failure

hi guys,

Wondering if anyone has had this fault and the best way to fix it. Basically, the small ball joint where the base wiper arm connects to the main rod from the motor "popped out" and is cracked. The RAC man nicely fixed it with a clip, however i would like to get it sorted properly as the clip will work its way off with time. Any ideas what this plastic part is, and if i can change it without replacing the whole rod to the motor??

Very easy fix, the part you need is about £8 from your OPC, it is a short piece about 5-6" long which
fits over the two ball cups. It shoud be all you need. I think the part is (short connecting rod) 944 628 033 00.
 
I haven't read the other thread yet but one further thought. On 924 and 924S (and I presume 944) after 20 or so years the original lubricant in the wiper arm spindles gives up the ghost and the spindles WILL go tight and then seize. Leads to burnt out wiper motors as the fuse doesn't always pop - and can lead to joints coming adrift under load of very stiff spindles. It is quite easy to take off the entire wiper linkage and motor (WD40 on spindle is an 'iffy', temporary cure) and then take circlips off spindles, dismantle and refill spindle housing with moly grease. Spindles also sometimes start corroding when unlubricated and this corrosion increases diameter fractionally, helping the seizure. Use very fine emery paper and clean off all particles before re-greasing.
Although plastic/nylon balljoints in theory don't need lubricating according to some, I prefer to disconnect each balljoint and put a blob of silicone grease in there.
Then forget about the linkage for the next 20 years.
Whilst it is all on the bench you can take the cover off the motor gears and renew that grease too.
 
Please can anyone help? I tried to remove the old wiper actuator arm (drivers side), obviously it came off the wiper spindle end fine, however i couldnt seem to get it off the motor end. I didnt use very much force. Should i use a bar to lever it off. Also, do i then need to 'lever' the new one back on....

Mark - yes and yes.

Old one is a press-fit at each end ~ it will come off with force (I seem to remember using the butt of a hammer stricking downwards).

New one is "stiff" to pop on - just persevere. I stuck a bit of wood in at the motor end and levered off of this to seat it.
