Driveshaft seal oil leak

My 2004 car has just returned from a service and I was advised that the right main drive shaft has an oil leak, engineer seemed to indicate that this had occurred on a number of cars. They advised it is a 7 hour repair job!
Should this be happening on a car which is low mileage and not yet 4 years old?

Sorry Richard, but do you in fact mean Rear Main Seal?

If so then yes, this is fairly common, but I understood that OPC's were now fixing this under goodwill - as long as the car has been serviced correctly of course.

Hi Mark, probably my misunderstanding, the fault reported by the technician on his sheet is "R/main oil leak -dripping". Is this common then, I guess I should write to Porsche GB about it being fixed?

That will be the rear main oil seal (RMS).

You could say it's fairly common ... And then some!

I don't think you need to write to Porsche - the Service Manager should have discussed it with you. Of course the policy may have changed from last year, but I understood they were doing them FOC up to 7 or 8 years old now...

Mark, my car has always been serviced and MOT'd by AFN Guildford. There was no indication of this being done for free, I was advised it was a 7 hour job and did I want it done now? Not very good customer service for a car under 4 years old, especially as they obviously new about it being a common problem!
