Drivetrain failure cause

Hoping for some suggestions for my now broken s2

Coming off a roundabout in 2nd gear, driving fairly hard!.......at about 5500 changing up to 3rd horrible noise as the clutch hits the floor and no drive. Coast to a halt. Slight smell of rubber and clutch. When depressing clutch after failure some really loud horrible noises (metallic, grinding, course vibrations/ rattle that sound as if they are going to be very expensive to repair!) from drivetrain (towards the front) and no movement. Any suggestions??

I have no idea, (I'm sure one of the veterans here will know) but I would say that your clutch is goosed (rivets breaking off possibly).

When mine did something similar I had stripped the splines on the clutch and torque tube []

It wasn't too expensive to fix (£300 ish for the clutch and £100 for a torque tube from a breakers in Leeds as it happens) but I did the work myself, with a hand from my brother. It's a big old job if the torque tube has gone as well as you have to drop the box (as you do for the clutch) and the rear suspension to get it out.

I think Porsche quote 16 hrs labour just for a clutch (if I'm remembering correctly)

If it's from the front then it will be clutch-related.

Stripped splines, as per northernboy? Never heard of it before, but it's a possibility.

Could be (with the smell you mentioned) that the rubber centre of the clutch has finally given up the ghost and you are trying to engage gear with the remnants of whatever is left ....

If you are looking at a DIY job to repair it then I'd be going as if to change the clutch (so, exhaust/gearbox/torque tube off, rear bellhousing removed) and have a gander at what you come across.

Oli.
