Driving Boxster for commute?

Jase, I use my 987S for my daily commute of 115 miles 3 or 4 days a week. Every journey is an adventure and I couldn't imagine going back to an 'ordinary' car. As long as you keep it well maintained and take the normal precautions in bad weather you'll be fine. Get rid of the Saab is my advice! Best regards, Richard

Hey Guys,

After your opinion here:

I work in business development and have an 08 Boxster 2.7 which I've cherished from new. I do about 400 miles a week for work so bought myself a 15 year old Saab 9-3 about 6 months ago to munch up the miles, endure the salt during the winter and reduce running costs.

However, I'm now getting a bit tired of being in a 15 year old car every day and looking at the boxster in the garage which gets driven once a week!

I wonder how things would stack up if I got rid of the saab and just accepted the wear and tear on the Box and enjoyed it every day?

Anyone else doing lots of miles in a Box?

Jase

now on my 5th porsche first four averaged about 4-5k miles a year and definately not my daily drivers. lost lots on depreciation on most of them just had winter tyres fitted to the boxster s having done 7k miles in 6 months, since i bought it(6k miles with the roof down in this glorious weather weve had)and use daily.now intend to continue using all winter .will probably lose marginally more in depreciation but wil lhave had MASSES more fun.i am never going to drive anything other than my porsche ALL the time!!!(except when we go away in linda car with the dogs[:D]) so sell saab and never stop smiling

On my fifth Porsche and generally commuted daily all year round. Last summer I ran a beat up MX5 to soak up the miles as I had a daily commute of 130 miles with heavy traffic for a large amount of it. It wasn't long before I wished to get back to just driving the Cayman. Ok it saved 11K miles which I'm glad of now but I missed a lot of fun.

Hi I am on my 3rd Boxster and it's used everyday rain or shine for work shopping, Porsche events and Wotys abroad .No probs at all .Useable practical and fun into the bargain. It's going to depreciate whether you use it or leave it in the garage. [:D] Tracy Boxster RS

Great replies guys, I agree with you on the depreciation front, the drop in value is stunning (think mine is worth <20k now on a px!!) with only very low mileage! I'm guessing that even if I had 60k miles now the difference in value wouldnt be that much. I originally thought I would keep immaculate for many years to come and have only done about 5000 miles pa with mainly weekend drives. It is really rubbish sitting in a 15 year old car on a daily basis though! Costing me tax, insurance and maintenance too. How do you daily drivers manage the salt etc. Seems to carve up the brake calipers etc etc. Pretty hard to clean it more than once a week, any precautions or tips? It does get garaged every night so doesn't get the frost! My drive is basically all motorway going to the coast away from London so no urban traffic.

Just my 2 pence worth - Sell your £20K 2.7 NOW![&:] YES NOW - read on:- At least you will get a resonable return and stop the depreciation rot! Then continue to drive a Boxster as a daily commute by buying something like this for well under five grand http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3371168.htm Well your still commuting to work in a Boxster and your pounds are in the bank. You have also stopped the depreciation drain![;)] Save for a High days and Holidays 911 (something like a good 993) - you would have to save 5k plus to add to your 15K in the bank. Then you would have the best of both worlds - and when you did take the 911 for an occaisonal spin it would be a real treat[8D] Now your the proud owner of two Porsche cars and at the current rate your annual depreciation has just about stopped [:-] Now why didn't I think of that?[&o] Edit to allow a PS. Well I dont have to tell you what to do with the SAAB - do I?

All good points, but I like my car too much and at 6ft5 I dont fit into a 986! I think I'll just get driving her every day and enjoy!

Hi Jase. Wise move using the Boxster more, if you want any tips on body protection from the winter elements I am a car valeter & detailer and can advice on the best and most hard wearing products to use to protect your paint work and wheels for the next few months just pm me if you are interested. Cliff.

Hi As others have said ditch the Saab and use the Boxster for the commute. Mine is a 2.9 and I do about 50 miles a day mixed roads rain or shine and I wouldnt dream of leaving it in the garage! These cars are made to be driven! Enjoy it.

I'm still worried about winter gravel rash, are people just accepting and getting affected areas resprayed when they get bad enough?

There are a few touch up kits which are said to be pretty good either that or as you say front end respray from time to time. For touch up I've been recommended Langka & Chipex with the Langka kit you use Porsche touch up paints with Chipex the colour comes with the kit.

Next time you are at the doctors ask him what he has got for gravel rash[:-] Of course if you could tuck yorself into a 986 (see post 7) a visit to the doctors would not be necessary![;)]

Just looked at euroncap crash test rating for my 99 saab 9-3 versus the boxster. Boxster scored 5 star while saab looked pretty sad at 4 star with passenger cabin deformation, another good reason to be driving the Box!!
