Driving experience at Silverstone

I have signed up for my freebie experience courtesy of my OPC to drive the new face lifted 911 at Silverstone in a couple of weeks time. Has anyone done this yet? What do they allow you to do?

Hi David,
I'm very jealous. You must have a good relationship with your OPC.
I doubt anyone has done this yet but I imagine it will be very good if the Millbrook day is anything to go by.
I don't know about anyone else, but I would love to hear your feedback on the car and the Silverstone experience.
Enjoy!
James

Join the club ,

This will then be available, its free to all MEMBERS that are going to Silverstone , details in PP, its simple ring the number and book. The track is fantastic. NOT TO BE MISSED....

I got my invitation yesterday and have arranged to go to Silverstone on 17th July. I remember attending Millbrook when the 964 was launched and being piloted by Tiff Needell around the course. 165mph on the bowl was terrific. Not much chance of such high speeds at the Silverstone facilty but am very keen to try the PDK.

The Silverstone drive day for 997 Gen 2 depositors and selected guests is not the same as the 20 minute drive offered to Club members at the Silverstone classic. I understand one will only be driven at the Classic (see June PP). Eitherway, it is only for 20 mins and not a whole day/drive/food etc.

Further to my last, this is NOT the whole day GEN2 purchasers deal, formally held at Millbrook or Mira. This is just a taster for depositors and selected guests and will last only 2 - 3 hours (unlike the 20 minutes offered to Clun members).

I am booked for the 14th July. Each OPC has been allocated 2 days and I think 60 slots.

Yes I have a two/two and half hour slot on 22nd July 6-8pm ish and you get about an hour in the cars they advised me. I am waiting now the details to come through by email.

Looks like I am on one of the first days - 10 July at 1.30pm. Looking forward to trying the new engine to see if it feels much different.

Got my invite yesterday - not sure when or if I'll be able to make it []. See how things go - at least it will mean a run out though in my AM Vantage[8|]

If you do go, you will save petrol in your AM. After driving the 997, you will not want to get back into your Aston [:D]

Risky day out dyllan - could end up costing you £80K - once you have driven the car you will want one!![;)]

just flu over the top of porsches new facility at silverstone ,very small and twisty track ,been built on the old rally super special stage .
If i get chance next week will fly back over and take some photo's

Good afternoon

Happened upon this thread and as was at Silverstone yesterday 14.00 slot for the 997 ' taster' I set out some impressions below.

The day is fairly corporate, the new centre well planned to move people through with static cars on the ground floor restaurant and internal and external viewing above. Have to say everyone wearing a Porsche badge was helpful and friendly .

The new car is something of a visual anti climax, kind of the same whilst sporting mild changes. I liked the new wheels particularly when painted black. Somehow the 997 is like a bloke in a suit, smart but anonymous and almost cries out for an expression of individualism though an aerokit won't be on the market for another 10 months.

The circuit is short and very technical, tight blind corners, adverse cambers etc with no straight to speak of to welly the gas and gain an impression of the new cars potential. Nothing wrong with learning to drive well however except the workload is quite high, the time short and highly regulated to programme and absorbing the details of the actual car becomes secondary to driving it well and not making a pratt of oneself.

The two special areas are fun, the skid zone and kick plate demonstrates 360's very well untill your reaction times catch up, as with the slidey water spray zone. The little circuit with the slippery surfaces was very good as this allows drifting and fairly acurate control via the gas pedal.

Drove 997, 997s with and without PDK and a gen 1 997. Hard to notice the difference between new and old manual cars for reasons above though steering turn in seemed sharper in the new car.

Have been true manual gearbox fan for years and hated old auto box so was prejudiced against pdk from the start.
Reallity however is that it's fantastic, changes completely seamless in manual mode with amazing acceleration. The steering wheel gearchange buttons are a bit unpleasant however if you use the lever as a sequential changer as in rally and touring race cars track days will take on a new dimension.

I left wanting more drivingafter an hour in various cars and enjoyed the experience.Porsche are keen to explain that this is an appetizer for the driving experience, ex Millbrook, that come with a new car when the facilities are used for much more focussed and specific instruction.

Did miss a blast though ! Now need to justify spending 75 grand on a car in a recession. hey ho!

John
