Driving Experiences

While responding to a thread on someone who was setting off into Europe for the first time, I noticed he was receiving a lot of good advice from various people. It got me thinking that it's the time of the year were as the weather is starting to improve and we want to get out and enjoy driving our motors.

There are obviously many contributors to these forums that live all over the UK that have got driving experiences, both locally where they live here in the UK, and also possibly in Europe that they have experienced while on vacation etc. It could be that you might have actually driven these roads, or even heard of from other people, or even read about in magazines, it would be good to share this knowledge in case any of us would be in that location or want day trip out.

For example, my father lives near Cirencester, and there is some fantastic driving conditions from my home in Bedfordshire to that area. Then there is the "Route Napoleon" I was recommended this while in France last year. The Porsche was made for this type road, unbelievable, and you don't have to go fast either, was just good driving "¦"¦"¦ would be good to hear from others on their experiences "¦"¦.

A good idea. I have done a few continental trips, living in Southsea (the seaside part of Portsmouth) means it is easy to hop on a ferry. Went all the way to Italy with a 20 year old 924 a few years back and will probably get on a ferry soon with the Boxster if business does well. After all we all talk a lot about fixing and cleaning our cars not what we have them for, driving.

What about favourite UK roads. There is a road out of Petersfield, Hampshire that goes up through Steep and eventually joins the A32. It winds uphill through lovely country with corners 'restricted' to 10 and 20 MPH and then turns to dead straight undulating road, probably old Roman Roads in this area. I have jut looked at Streetmap to find the road number without success and it's badly sign posted locally to make you take the more sensible bigger road. I will try and find its number to post later.

Lots of good roads in North Wales. I recommend [;)]the A5 from Llangollen to Bangor, the A4212 from Bala to Trawsfynydd, the 548 from Llanrwst to Llanfair TH, then the 544 from LLTH to Bylchau, then the 543 to Pentrfoelas. The A 487 from Caernarfon to Aberystwyth. Thats just a sample, the A 470 from Llandudno to Cardiff is a gem.

Beware North Wales is "Brunson Land" i.e. their evangelical Chief Constable is the man so look out for unmarked "Arrive Alive" "Safety Camera vans". Sheep especially on moorland stretches tend not to mix well with Porkers especially at high speed, any impact with such wild life at anything over the legal limit is probably a write off, sheep definitely, Porker probably.[&o]

If you get the right weather, time of day and year and a dearth of Brunsons Boys you can have a lot of fun. Evo mag don't go there regularly for nothing. Plenty of good hotels and Guest Houses, my favourite Portmeirion, surrounded by road gems... hotels not bad either. Have fun be safe.[:)]

Must apply for commission off Welsh Tourist Board!!
