Driving in Spain

I think many of us just pack a set of Lucas bulbs from our local friendly accessory store to get over the regulations, since it's impracticable to carry or fit the correct units specific to our vehicles.

I've had an old pack of bulbs and a couple of fuses in an emergency bag for years. I think the bulbs came from a Morris Minor 1000. The chances of a policeman being interested in them are close to zero, I've been driving in Spain for the last twenty years and the only thing that the police want to see are the reflective vests in case you break down. Ideally keep them in the car so that you can get at them immediately in an emergency and not in the bottom of the boot under all your gear. Tucked under the front seats is easiest.

A copy of your insurance certificate and your driving licence to hand and you should be fine. I've never been asked for a V5 and wouldn't feel comfortable having that in the car.

Spanish roads are excellent, in the main, motorways are empty and the tolls much lower than France if you need to take them. Be aware that sometimes the Policia Locale will put up a road block to check for drink driving and target the expats. This only in the tourist resorts though.

Have a great trip.

Shortly we are driving through Spain from the north to south and back, which should be fun! I have been reading up on the legal requirements for cars (reflective vests, triangles, accident report forms, V5C original, proof of insurance etc) and there is a need for spare bulbs and fuses apparently. Does anyone do a kit? Design911.com only do a kit for the older 911s.....anyone do one for a 991.1? If not, what suggestions do you have for what to take please......?

My understanding is that you do need to carry the V5. See:

Gracias amigos! Just ordered a bulb pack from Ebay for £3.50. Perfect.....unless I actually need one of course!

I also have like others an old set of bulbs just in case I'm asked.

I think the term of 'if feasible to fit' is included, which I know none of mine are to do at the side of the road.

I've met the Spanish plod and they never asked to see anything other than my credit card [:(]

I have driven through many countries in Europe over the last few years and the most useful thing has been a folder under the seat with photocopies of all passport, car, license, breakdown and insurance documentation. If stopped, being presented with that seems to be sufficient and I have never had to produce any of the mandatory kit. (It was also very useful when we had all our bags nicked so I also have it all on a memory stick)

John,

Being doing this for years & you only need a handful of old bulbs from the drawer in the back of your garage (the one that never gets used!)

You will need:

HiVis vest (x2 if entering France)

Warning Triangle

Insurance cert (photo copy)

V5

Breathalyser kit (x2 if entering France)

Flashlight

You can buy these comprehensive kits from eBay for around £20ish

In reality you will never be asked to show these ..... but for £20 it's a piece of mind

I'm going to Brands & can lend you mine if it's easier .....

Although often mentioned the enforcement legislation was never passed in France .

"The enforcement of the law making it compulsory to carry breathalysers whilst driving in France has been postponed indefinitely. Whilst the law itself is still in place the authorities have recognised problems with the supply of suitable breathalysers and will not issue fines until further notice"

But always useful to carry anyway.

As for the High Viz, don't bother with the expensive item the likes of RAC/AA and halfords sell, £3.99 vest from Screwfix is fine!

Thanks guys! Kenny I have all that - thank you for your kind offer though. Christopher - we are not going through France. We have decided to risk the diesel-powered stomach pump from Plymouth to Santander. Hoping for a smooth crossing - was told by a fellow PCGB member on this year’s Manx Tour to check to see whether the ship’s pool is empty when it arrives at Plymouth......a sure sign of a rough crossing!!
