Driving like a dog

Dear All,

My 2.5L Boxster has been driving like dog for a week or so now. No problems on start up but very quickly I'm getting kangeroo petrol syndrome. When pulling away from lights for example, I'm losing power and have to declutch and feather the accelerator. Strangely, if I re-engage the drivetrain and back off the gas slightly the power returns in a surge. Rich mix or poor fuel injection?

Anyway, I thought it might be the injectors so have adminstered 2 lots of Redex cleaner but to no avail. Is the boxster fitted with an airflow meter that could potentially get partially blocked?

Car was serviced at Motortune about month or so ago.

Has anyone got any ideas?

cheers,

Iain

Take it back to Peter!

It sounds like a problem I had which turned out to be a loose battery connection. ECU was affected giving kangaroo acceleration.

Yes it does have a Mass Airflow Sensor. These did have a tendancy to get fouled on earlier cars, but this is more likely to result in a "check engine" light I believe...

I had a very similar problem with my 3.2. Tracked it down to a totally shot rotor arm! I also replaced the distributor head, since the electrodes in there weren't lookin' too great either. Faulty High Tension Lead(s) and / or Sparking Plug(s) are another possibility. It isn't necessarily a fuel problem.

Just an update for info...

It was the air mass sensor that had gone kaput causing a missfire as the engine was starved of air (Peters technical description was "sounds a bit fluffy!!"). Old out , new in and no probs so far. It must have been a prolonged fade out as there was a noticable increase in throttle response.

Boxster (and 996?) owners, beware as just before the fix the power failure was unpredictable (a pant-filler when pulling out a t-junctions I tell thee!).

cheers,

Iain
