practice left foot braking technique, one foot on each pedal and you'll be out of any junction quicker than any manual.

C'mon guys, give us Tip fans a break! It's actually a lot smarter than most people think. Have a look at the owner's manual, but here is some interesting reading from the SIT.

I'm a manual man, but the wife has an avant multitronic and and slk auto prior so I appreciate a good auto as much as a manual.

Whilst searching for my c4 manual, i tried a few tiptronics out, I had driven earlier air cooled tips and found the gears to be long legged, however the 996 tip was short legged and fantastic!, this is no girly box like some people like to joke about, in fact I found I drove better in the tip. I like the noise control (or lack of!) that revving the manual gives.

Its well known now that Porsche are selling more tiptronic 911's than they are manuals, that says a lot, they are actually very very good.
 
Not sure if the Audi system is the same but my Allroad (diesel) is a Tip and I am soooooo glad the 996 isn't. Having said that, it suits the Allroad fine.

Looks as though we're both in the same sort of situation. I had an Audi auto which I liked because I could drive it in a manual style if necessary. Replaced with another Audi (Avant again), but with a tip' box, and really it's not great. It's tolerable but in tip' mode it has a mind of its own when it comes to slowing down and in the auto' setting it's not possible to click up and down the gears like I could with the previous one. The Porsche tip' is interesting and, with the wheel shift, tempting even, but I'm yet to be convinced.
 
Audi have two types of auto box available for all cars, tiptronic and multitronic, not sure the full list of differences but one I know of is that one doesnt creep forward in drive and it can also roll backwards on a hill start, apart from that, I know the shifts are different.....have a look on audi's website for the differences.

Our avant has the multitronic.

I have been enjoying my Tip for 3 years and a mixed combination of town, motorway and a good few track days.

The Tip tends to pull away in 2nd, go if you need a quick getaway (Nova Brigade and the Law spring to mind[;)]) then I would suggest you engage 1st in Manual mode.

I have found that on the track the Tip is right about 80% of the time and the corners I know I need a different gear I engage manually.

The box is pretty clever in selecting the right gears, especially not mid-corner etc. but if I know I am entering some roads in a, sheal we say spirited fashion, I will drop it down a cog in manual.

Mine is the earlier box and you must engage manual before the Tip controls work but I understand that the later boxes you can change up and down wilst still in Tip mode. I tried that on a Cayenne and it worked very well.

Another benefit on a tip is two pedals and it free's your left hand to play with your phone ([:D] kidding before I get a massive reaction) or your other half's right leg!

Last 3 Porsches have been Tip and it fine for my style off driving,would not consider anything else ,the only drawback I found was in the 993 that I had when useing it on the occasional track day when left in auto you had to use kick down a lot . To be honest I just leave it in auto mode .
I beleive Porsche are looking at the DSG for the next auto box that is the best I have driven even in a Skoda it was a seamless change
