Dropped Hex bolt!!

Hi Guys,

A little bit of help needed! I was fixing my fan belt sensor (the internal microswitch wheel was worn and needed to be fixed in place) but on refitting the switch back into the car the hex bolt fell out and under the fan belt housing. Frustrating thing is I can see it (just) and can move it with a bent piece of wire but I cant get it out!!! Half an hour later and its still there!

Any advice on how I can retrieve the bolt? Do I need to take the undertray off and possibly reach it from there....Can I still drive the car around without the bolt finding its way into something important??/

Great fun this DIY maintenance!!

Nip down to your local motor factors and get one of the magnets on the end of a thin bit of metal.

Failing that, magnet taped to a length of stick or something similar.

Ask me how I know!!!

Same happened to me recently. I used a bent coat hanger to pull the bolt in view and hold in place while I then retrieved it with long nose pliers. But Rob's magnetised rod/screwdriver would probably be easier.

p.s. Don't drop anything to the left of the blower as they are even harder to retrieve there!

B****ks! Guess where mine is......

I have ordered some flexible grabber thingys and a magnetic, extendable thingy (plus some other non-essential items[:D]) so hopefully when these arrive I can crack on with it.....so annoying as it was a really, really simple job too!!

or try a long screwdriver with mag tip..

at least the car wasnt running.. a mate decided to refit his airbox to his beetle after we just put the engine back in and got it running, and dropped the small mounting bracket down there just as I was walking past.. The fan belt grabbed it, whipped it around the bottom of the tin ware, flipped it out, and I got it straight in the eye at about warp 7 []

took about 3hrs, 1/2 a large pizza and 4 or 5 well deserved post engine re-build beers for my eye sight to return fully [:D]

At last its finally out - 30 seconds with the magnetic tool and its out!! Why didnt I have one in my toolkit beforehand........

Thanks for the advice...now I can get out driving it again!!

I used a baking spoon with a tip of Blutak on it.

It was one of those rather surrreal, keep calm moments.
