Dual-Mass Flywheel

I have owned my 993 Targa LHD for almost 8 years now and do about 5k miles p.a. - about 4 years ago I noticed a clunk in the transmission (reminiscent of a slack U/J) as I moved off from standstill. It has not got any worse (or indeed better!), and I tend to get it moving fairly gently before giving it any serious acceleration. I saw an article in Classic & Sports Cars way back which seems to imply that this is a sign of the dual-mass flywheel unbonding, and the only remedy is new clutch kit, including flywheel and pilot bearing for the gearbox input shaft. All of which sounds horribly expensive......

Any experience or comments please?

Sounds about right, unfortunately.
My experience was with a 996C2 and it exhibited exactly the same symtoms.
Only sure way is to measure the amount of cicumferential backlash between the crankshaft and the outer starter ring gear. I think about 20mm is just about permissable. This translates into quite considerable "slack" at the road wheels.
I think Porsche have issued a workshop tech bulletin on the correct diagnosis...

I recently replaced the clutch and DM flywheel on my 968 for the same reason at 98k miles. I checked the flywheel with the clutch removed and there was about 3" of radial movement when there should only be about 15mm. Clutch operation much smoother and slack in the drivetrain eleminated. Parts were about £900 for the clutch, flywheel, all new bolts and crank seal.

Ninemeister at Warrington replace the dual mass flywheel with a light weight flywheel and clutch from the RS. Its cheaper and works fine. The only thing you may not like is that the gear box is a little noisy at low speed under load, ie too higher gear at say 10 to 20mph.
