Dull instrument light

Hope someone can help, my instruments have always been very poorly illuminated, I'd like to try to improve this, do the bulbs need replacing ? are there any sensible upgrades ? has anybody tried it ?

All suggestions welcomed

At first guess I'd suggest some of the bulbs must have blown but I'd have thought you'd have noticed it getting worse over your ownership. Maybe there is a fault with the rheostat. Mine are certainly too bright for me on full power so I generally drive with them dimmed down to about 25%. Snag with that is the illumination on the central console lights is then too dim to see.

plus 1 although I expect we will all have to ensure our instrument lighting is up to scratch, given the new MOT regs on instrument lighting. I had a chat with a mate over the weekend and he had an MOT fail due only to this issue on his 924 last week!

I agree , the instruments are bright at night, time to check voltage at one of the bulbs and perhaps temp bypass rheostat just to eliminate it as a restriction , electrically speaking of course.

Just had a thought, what colour are your instrument faces as the tequipment white ones and others don't illuminate like he factory ones. I don't suppose that someone has upgraded?

Old bulbs in the instruments certainly won't help and it would probably be a good move to replace all of these with new bulbs from a quality manufacturer.

Regarding the bulbs that illuminate the switch symbols, I replaced mine with LEDs (soldering job) and they are now bright and legible even with the dimmer turned down, and should also last for the life of the car.

My 993 speedo is dimmer on the left than it is on the right. Is this the design or a fault? Thanks.

That's just a dead bulb or two! If you find an easy way to get the speedo out please let me know.[:(]

Yeh thought so :-( I'll probably just put up with this one!

don't forget the posting I made in this thread about MOT reg changes concerning dashboard/instrument lighting

Yes, that would be a nightmare. Anyone any ideas how much it costs to get these bulbs swapped at a garage?

10 new bulbs cost me £12.95

It's a matter of pulling out all the dials and replacing them. Best to remove the steering wheel to make it easier. I was surprised none had blown but they are definitely brighter now. We don't have a dimmer on 964s to adjust....maybe the OP just has theirs on the dimmest setting?

hey steve. Do those bulbs also work in the switches eg cigarette lighter etc?
No they're specifically for the dials. I'm not sure what bulbs are used for the switches but i do know that the cig lighter does not illuminate on the 964.

The cigarette lighter does not light up but when activated both the fog lights and the headlight switches should. The bulb required is the Osram 2721 (only a few pounds for a pair from Ebay) and is easily accessed by just firmly pulling the switch off of the mounting and pulling out the old bulb.
