Durametric

Hi everyone, I hope you can help.

I think I have a bad sensor as the car hesitates and the power delivery is now no where near as sharp as it was. The car has new leads, new plugs and a new distributor. I'm thinking exhaust sensor or MAF, but before it starts draining my wallet at it's usual alarming rate, I thought it'd be useful to know exactly what the issue is.

Can anyone recoomend the best place to buy the Durametric software and system? Those of you with experience of the software, is it all it's cracked out to be? Can I rely on it to tell me what's what?

Mostly I love the car, had it for ages, still can't resist looking over my shoulder when I leave it any place, but at the moment it's doing my head in!

Many thanks
GR

Hi Maurice,

thanks for your reply. The engine is varioram, I've checked the ram stack actuators and they move as they should on turning on the ignition. I have a vacuum guage permanantly installed in the lines and it's showing a good reading, which it holds for many days with out any drop. The car has a motorsound airbox and standard filter and is serviced every year by Porsche Reading. They changed the plugs at the last service.

The one thing that makes me think it's a sensor is that if I disconnect the battery, the car runs as it should for a few days and then starts getting marginally worse each day until you notice the differance.

Your advice is welcomed.

If you are going to buy a Durametric then get it direct from the US - Durametric.com - cheaper than the ones that have been seen in UK and it arrives very quickly.

It does work (tell you the fault codes) - but as Maurice says, that's only any good if Porsche designed a built in fault code for what ever is wrong. It does give readouts for the MAF: actual readings (not just fault codes) - and some other sensors.

Thanks Mark,

I've had the car for many years now and I guess I'll have it for many more, so I suppose it's a wortwhile investment.

Is VAT an issue?

In my view some sort of interigation system is very worthwhile, having attended the seminar at Cornbury House earlier in the year I was even more convinced, and like Mark in the absence of other readily available systems I went down the Durametric route.

With the current exchange rate purchase direct from the USA is cost effective and postage was very quick. However I subsequently received an invoice from FedEx for about £38 for unpaid customs taxes!.

The only downside of the system is that you are only able to use it on up to three cars which prevents you helping out others. My local independent garage charges £35 to undertake a scan, so cost of purchase are recovered quite quickly.

Thanks for all your replies guys, much appreciated.

Maurice, do you know if the knock sensor or engine temp sensor will show fault codes and be stored in the DME? The engine is a little more noisy than usual, high pitched like a gearbox or engine fan bearing. I guess if that's effecting the knock sensor it wouldn't show. I run the car on BP Ultimate or Shell V Power only, so hopefully fuel should not be an issue.

I think I will go for the Durametric, I assumed the pesky VAT would be an issue. Thanks for the heads up John.

If you want to have a play with the Durametric first, you are welcome to have a go with mine. It's the professional version, so no car limit.

Thanks fellas, Richard, Maurice, very kind of both of you, its really good that both of you would extend such a favour to a fellow enthuiast. Richard, I think I'm just up the road from you in Charvil, perhaps we've passed each other?

However I ordered the system last night, if it doesn't show up I'll be in touch! I did think about getting the proffessional kit too but couldn't justify the cost as I have only the one Porsche and now don't personally know anyone else with one.

Once again, thank you for your kind offer.

Regards
GR

Thanks, Richard .. does yours have all the cables ? GR's should be the OBD2 cable anyway ..

Yes - ish. It's got the OBD2 plug for 993, another for 9x6 and 9x7, and the individual pin connections for the 19-pin round plug.

I work in Littlewick Green, which is even closer to Charvil, but I haven't seen a Guards Red 993 locally. Great colour - lots of people shy away from Guards, but I think it looks brilliant. If you see an Ocean Blue 996 with a frantic waving hand, you'll know who it is.
