Dusty Filter?

All,
I have just had my R serviced, new OE brakes, 40k service, plugs, belt, warranty renewal etc.

In trying to sort out a trim rattle from the rear left engine area so decided to pop the cover off and saw that my air filter had not been touched for donkeys as the filter and engine top were covered in fine dust.

I initially thought that the OPC had missed doing the change but from reading the service book it seems that the filter is changed at 60k miles/6 years - can this be right? - seems like a good way to lose BHP to me......

Thanks for any advice etc.
Kevin

Best not to leave as long as service schedule if car is regularly used enthusiastically. My car goes on track and I change oil, air and brake fluid change annually.

I agree with Ralph.

I would not advise leaving the air filter undisturbed for 60k miles. Like Ralph, I cleaned my CR air filter regularly, usually once a year. I replaced the OE paper element with a cotton hi-flow BMC filter which I cleaned myself with a K&N air filter cleaning kit. I also cleaned the dust off the top of the engine at the same time and checked the power steering pump fluid level. I found that with track day use the steering pump was working hard. The fluid level consequently used to need topping up on average once a year.

Yes Kevin, 6 years/60k miles is the official air filter change period.

It seems rather excessive to me but presumably Porsche has validated satisfactory engine performance during vehicle development in different climates and under different (including dusty?) conditions. As always, we can opt for a shorter period.

But the more important question is......did you find the rattle?!

I'm also surprised that if they did the belt, which is a 6 year item, why didn't they suggest doing the other 6 year items - replace the air filter and PDK clutch oil?

its shocking, I just changed mine also, I must have gained 40bhp in the R it even pops and burbles a little now:)

A new cotton filter flows more than K&N , the issue is cotton flows much less once clogged up so to keep bhp I think a change every year is worth while.

6 years for an air filter is shocking imo it should be at least done on the 4 year major !.

cars were done once a year when I was growing up.

this is after 25k miles, fully clogged , and they say ok till 60k lol

Just had my S serviced ( minor service ) and got told the filter, belt and PDK flush was due so had to go back a week later for that, rather daft that the filter isn't included with the major service when the ventilation dust filter is included in services but I'll see if there is any difference in the economy which is a good indicator and I have the same trip to do soon as I did two weeks ago although I find the biggest variable in fuel economy is traffic causing me to run lower gears.

A periodic check of the discolouration as shown in Mr D's photo is easy enough and that it is six years or 60K miles is ridiculous, I have seen paper filters which are clean in appearance after years in use and others clogged with dust or oil and other contamination which have done little but the owner asked me to take a look as his car was using a lot of fuel! Unlikely to effect any of our cars but some out there are not at all sympathetic to their vehicles. in a car which covers most of it's mileage cruising on a motorway and out in the country while six years may be acceptable to Porsche less would be preferable and for one used on track regularly, maybe the beginning of the trackday season.
