Some of you know the 924 Turbo cab project we are currently working on. Today we received a fine for failing to SORN the vehicle. No reminder, no notification, just saying the SORN expired 31st Jan 2007. I was under the impression that a SORN lasted for 12 months. We only purchased the vehicle in June last year, and has been off the road ever since. £40 only if we pay up my May, £80 after that, then the usual court action etc. Do all SORNs run out on the 31st of January or something? Now I have to panic about our spares car as well, as I have no notification of that - again, as far as I was aware, we notified the DVLA of change of ownership, and it is SORNed for 12 months... If this wasn't on DVLA paper I would say it is a scam to extract fines for something we haven't done wrong... the only thing that is missing is the please pass this on to ten other unsuspecting souls and you too can make a fortune... Surely this has to be illegal (oh I forgot, the Taxman is above the law), if only I had the time and money to challenge it... Anyone any ideas of anything I can do? Who do I not like sufficiently that I can register a car in their name...Hmmm wonder if I can register the spares car to Mr. Brown...

SORN's are valid for 12 months. Since when you registered your ownership and also declared SORN on form V890 at the same time, then the two dates must be the same.
Tell DVLA to go **** themselves![]
Tref, please read R26 forum question I posted about sunday, cheers.

You should always recieve a reminder form the DVLA, and the reminder is the same form to relicence the vehicle. I have just recieved one notifying me that the sorn on LCW is about to expire and it needs to be relicenced or re-sorned. If you sorned it back in June, then politely point out to the DVLA the glaring clerical error. They have made mistakes with my sorns on LCW in the past but I defeated the £40 fixed penalty by pointing out that I had sorned it via the Local office in Slough, and that perhaps Slough might like improve their own communication skils within the DVLA. Ask them to explain under what conditions you would need to renew the sorn after only six months, having sorned and registered the vehicle in your name back in June 2006
