Dyno Day

Hey R24'ers my register (3.2) had a great day out the other week at Weltmeister's over at Silverstone running our cars on their Dyno. Great fun and very informative

It cost £35 per car and at the end they give you a couple of printouts showing your BHP, torque etc. If you sit in with them during the tests they will talk you through any trouble spots that they find. Steve Murley and I went and had a really informative day.

They are a good team...not just out to empty your wallets.

If anyone is interested I could try and see if they could fit us in as a regional day.

Probably need around 20 cars to make it a goer.

Let me know and if we get enough interest I'll give them a call. Can't promise anything as it depends how much work they have on, but it could give us a Saturday out as the autumn sets in and events thin out a bit.

What do you think?

Steve

Hi Steve,
Please let me know if you manage to set this up i would be really interested in coming along.

Jason.

Okay Jason - I'll get Daryl and Bev to put a round robin email out to all R24 and see what we get back. I'll speak to Weltmeisters anyway and see how busy they are and if they have any free Saturdays over the next few months.

Cheers

Steve

Hey R24'ers my register (3.2) had a great day out the other week at Weltmeister's over at Silverstone

Steve - FYI, a few folks have had a new Steve wong chip fitted, and I'll also be trying out exhausts soon.. perhaps we could combine the efforts ?

Can we discuss joining the events if there is sufficient interest ?

Rgds

Steve - Great idea. It would be interesting if we could separate some of the hype from reality.

I have had problems with "chipping" my car as my ECU ref. number appears to be non-standard. When I give the tuners my ECU and chip codes the car never even fires up!

I would love to go down the Steve Wong road, but I am loathed to have chips going back and forth.

On another subject - exhaust systems. I wanted to improve my 3.2 sound without sacrificing BHP & torque and to stop my 20 year old son laughing when comparing flat 6 against old V6 TVR, he once called the old girl - a hovercraft for goodness sake, but I don't want to spend over a grand on SSI's

So I went all the way and imported a Fabspeed muffler by-pass! So now only pre-muffler and nothing else!

Sounds like an RSR, good job I live in the country. Only cost $50 and they promote it as the lightest most powerful system on the market. I want to see the figures. Sounds unbelievable, but it feels like some of the torque has gone, but for that money it was worth the experiment.

I am talking to a guy from Larini who do the Ferrari and Lambo systems. I explained what I was trying to achieve and he's going to do some exploratory work on getting a good sound at a sensible price out of a system. He was very interested particularly regarding our day at Weltmeisters. Some of these manufacturers have no idea about registers like our and what we could do for their business.

Anyway when I have finally sorted out all the bolt on stuff, I will set Steve W the task of getting a chip to work in my ECU.

I'll promote the day with R24 and lets keep talking. Send me an email and we could make a really good day.

I was talking to one of the team from the new 911 magazine at Brands they are looking for new ideas. Maybe we could get them involved in doing some comparative testing with different systems to see what various set ups gain or lose over a standard car.

Steve

Steve- - For me the thing that I find interesting are the claims made by aftermarket chip/exhaust etc. companies claiming +5bhp, +10bhp and so on.

This type of objective testing should ultimately show the best route to go down to obtain the biggest bang for your buck.

Talking to Alan from our region, he has done a lot of work government work with the Met Police on their cars - particularly chipping and with all their resources they found no appreciable difference on normally aspirated cars - hp wise or against the clock.

Equally I was surprised when talking to the tech guy over there last time that SSI's only give you a couple of bhp for what ...nearly a £1000!

In the "old days" it was simple - high lift cam, a set of Webers and a Janspeed 4 branch straight through exhaust system. All bought on a Saturday, your Mini/Cortina was ready for fast road use by Sunday tea-time ...easy.

I really would be interested if a an objective "menu" could be developed for the ordinary chap. This seems a good way to go about it.

I am going over having spent $50 on a pipe and 20 mins. with a saw opening up my air box. Lets see where that takes me, either back or forwards and by how much.

Equally some of the guys have now got the Steve Wong Chip and their results will be interesting too.

Steve

Things are a movin'.... Looks like mid October (maybe the15th) for the Dyno day.

If you want to be included and haven't already contacted me then send me an email steve.twin@virgin.net and I'll add you to the list.

My register will have a bunch of guys who have done some work since our last visit, so the day will give you an insight into what can be achieved.

Steve

Hi Steve,

The 15th clashes with the R24 service clinic day at Cambridge , sorry but i am already booked for that and if many other people are it may affect the total number of people you require to book from the region for the dyno day.

Jason.

Thanks for reminding me Jason - major brain failure as I am there as well!

I have posted to the other guys a date option of the 30th October, I'll keep R24 up to speed if my brain holds out!!

Steve

Steve we have the service clinic at porsche cambridge on the 15th october and a lot of people are allready booked so we will have to try and book another day

Bev

Hi Jason,

We were talking about it at club night the other night and it looks like Steve will be trying for the end of November now.

Steve: Any news please feel free to speak up [;)]

Kind Regards

Steve

Right pay attention everybody [8|].......I have a date booked for the Weltmeister Dyno Day at Silverstone

[sm=spanner1.gif]SUNDAY 27th NOVEMBER 2005 at SILVERSTONE[sm=spanner1.gif]

We need at least 15 cars to get them to open up on Sunday...hopefully no problem

Cost ...£40 each car which will go down to £35 if we can get 25 cars on the day.

Maximum number - 35 cars.

Cars will be split into two groups air cooled and water cooled as the dyno setups are different. Please email me with your name, model and vehicle reg so that I can put a sheet together to give to the guys on the day. Address is steve.twin@virgin.net

Get moving 'cause I'd like to get the numbers together in plenty of time. If we can't fill the day then I'll put the invite out to other regions plus my register.

Steve

Twinny,
Hi i'm new to this forum, I own a '83 3.2 carrera, would be very interested to hear about your bhp figures of before and after the exhaust and air filter mods you carried out.

Is it legal to bypass the rear silencer ?

I take it your car is a zzz euro with no cat like mine ?

Nathan - welcome to the best register (in my opinion), good to have you on board.

Before I started on this infectious quest my car made just under 223bhp on the Weltmeisters dyno. After fitting the Hayward & Scott system it went to just under 245bhp (244.8). The airbox thing probably contributed little, maybe 1-2bhp at the top end, max.

A number of the guys (me included) are now on the Steve Wong Chip trail. He's a 3.2 tuner in the States who can take your charts and burn you a custom chip to optimise your air/fuel ratio across the rev range, giving a little more HP and better economy.

Ian Highfield has had some amazing results from this, making an extra 16bhp on his chip. Beware though I feel that this could become a serious addiction!

Regarding your silencer question, actually if you run a pre-cat car as you do then there are no real limits on exhausts in term of sound etc. So you can do pretty much whatever you like within reason. Some folk remove the pre-silencer and run straight through to a modified sports back box, but there are plenty of other options out there in the market. Just ask the guys on the forum.

My advice is don't go too loud as the driving experience gets very tiring. I fitted a Fabspeed bypass pipe, which made the thing sound like a racing car, but it was too tiring for everyday use. The H & S system is a good balance of cost, power and improved sound in my opinion.

Good luck.

Steve

Thanks for the reply Twinny, it made a very interesting read.

I like the idea of the silencer/muffler bypass. It's cheaper than a silencer and most importantly lighter. Also removing weight from the right end of the car should be a good thing.

My biggest problem with modifying my 3.2 is getting insurance that covers bhp increasing mods, I don't have a garage for my 3.2, it is taken up by my modded '81 turbo.

I also read the other day in January's 911 & porsche world that a UK company is going to make a hot wire conversion for the 3.2 and the 964 for about £700.00.

I am currently all spent out on modding my '81 930 turbo but if my silencer needs replacing it will be getting the bypass. I have a everyday car as well as the 911's.

What did you honestly thing of the quality of the H&S manifolds ?
Are they "fully" stainless steel including the flanges ?
I have some GHL manifolds/headers for my 930 but was dissapointed that they were not "fully" stainless steel. All of the flanges are ordinary steel.

My 930 is still in pieces at present.
My '83 3.2 needs the gearbox overhauling, it is a early 915. It's noisy.

Nathan - Sorry for not getting back to you I have been out of the country 'til today.

Can't comment on the H & S headers/manifolds as I don't have them. I just had the system from the heat exchangers fitted. I already had replacement stainless exchangers so left them on.

Regarding flanges, I'm not sure. Give Ian at H & S a call and he'll go through it with you.

All in all though I am really pleased with the performance and sound. They have a good guarantee so I'm not too worried.

I had the car re-dyno'd after fitting my SW custom chip and it now makes 253bhp and 222 lbs/ft of torque. I have another upgrade chip from Steve which arrived last week so it will be interesting to see what difference that makes. I'm probably at the limit now without opening up the engine which I won't be doing.

The car goes like a train now with a nice flat torque curve so I am happy.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info.

Seems alot of money is needed to get a few horses.
The turbo increases power much more for the money.

I will try that muffler bypass though when my silencer needs replacing.

Thanks.
