Earlier Engine Lid

Anyone know if a turbo spoilered 911 sc type engine lid will fit my 964? Or even a non spoilered type, that is pre 1990?

I know I should leave it standard but I like the look of the RS America and would like to have the same.

Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks

Bob.

I'm pretty sure they're all the same up to the 964 so would imagine a Carrera tail (which is the nearest to an RS America) would bolt straight on.

I'm not sure but I think I've read elsewhere that the hinge bolt holes are different between an SC/3.2 and a 964 so you'll need to adapt your existing hinges (or change to 930 hinges).

I'm sure someone will be along soon to confirm.

Ive seen an earlier car with a 964 engine cover/automatic spoiler, so Im guessing they must be close to a direct swap?..
Can you not just fit a fixed wing to the standard engine cover and sell your automatic spoiler section? Im guessing the outer skin of the deck lid is the same on both?

Bob,
If you do go ahead and swap and want to sell your complete 964 engine lid with the powered spoiler then please do get in touch. If it's in GP white then even better. You can email me via my profile.

I am looking to replace my lid on the RS which has an irreplaceable signature on it.

Many thanks,
Rich

Thanks all for the replies, it sounds like an early one should work.

Rich,
I don't want to fix a spoiler to my engine lid as the next owner may not share my taste and want to convert it back to standard. Also my car's Guards red and the spoiler has a very small crack, so it really wasn't what you wanted.

I'm searching everywhere for the right looking spoiler, if I come across a powered assy in white I'll let you know.

Thanks again,
Bob.

The car was signed at the factory by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche ('Butzi') - the signature says F.A.Porsche and it was immediately clear lacquered for protection. At Ragley Hall I met with Mike Bradley who brought the car into UK from Germany and he said it has faded just a little since he owned it but not too much. I usually have a magnetic GB sticker over it to protect it from UV and scrotes.

I recently had a letter from the Porsche Museum Historical Archive in Stuttgart saying it's very rare and should be looked after. I plan to remove the engine lid and hang it on the office wall - and swap it back when I take the car to shows. This is why I really need a perfect GP white engine lid with spoiler so it can be an easy swap.

I remember reading in the owners manual that the spoiler goes up and down at various speeds to aid engine cooling, and if its not working, don't exceed 55mph.

If you intend to put a fixed spoiler on, have you considered this?

the fixed ones he means are always up [;)]
there are a few newer styles which are similar to the RS america I think, but I dont know if the 993 lid would fit the '64? Also there is a white 964RS with red wheels for sale somewhere (its in porsche post I think) which has a similar rear spoiler (it might be an america I guess athough its not advertised as one) might be worth giving them a ring and see if they can shed any light or put you onto the original owner

PS.. Im very jealous of the signature!..

Just came across this in the Getty Design catalogue when it describes the fiberglass one they offer

"C2/4 decklid. Wider at the top and shorter than a 911 decklid. It also has a different bolt pattern for the hinges"

This implies that the lid is a different shape as well as having different hinges.

993 deckid is different again to the 964 lid and will definately not fit. Noticably different shape.

The spoiler is there for aerodynamics. I thought the manual states that the car may become unstable at high speed and be cautious when exceeding 70mph as the handling of the car is changed.
The microswitches for my spoiler died a few months ago (when the weather was very hot) and thus the spoiler wouldn't raise or lower. I had no issues with overheating.
Adrian Streathers book has a little bit in it about fixed spoiler fitting in the upgrading section. (An american owner puts a large fixed wing on his targa yuk!)
I will dig out the book and see if there are any pearls of wisdom about it there.

The one on the white Touring in PP looks very much like a Techart one.

There was a thread started earlier this week on Rennlist where someone was wanting to get an RS America spoiler for his C2. I don't know where this has got to but it might be worth a look.

Thanks everyone. Loads to consider, but I think re aerodynamics and cooling, if it works for the RS America it should be OK.

Right, off to Rennlist then...

Bob.
