i have been recently looking to buy a 911, i have looked at and now driven quite a few 911's, 1977-1982 and the gear boxe's seam alittle tricky, not that easy to get into gear all the time, is that right, do you get the knack after a while or am i looking at dog wrough cars ?

I think it's fair to say that smooth gear changing with a 915 gearbox could be described as an knack although once you get
it there should not be continual crunches when changing (we all get the odd one wrong!)

If there is (2nd to 3rd is common) then the syncro is probably on it's way out for that gear. Bear in mind these are not like
today's gearboxes, but do reward the time taken to get used to them. They cant be banged from gear to gear like a modern
box, they need a bit of TLC [;)]

If you don't want to take the time then you could always go for a post 87 3.2 with a G50 box which are a bit more modern
but command a premium.

Marc, I have a 1983 911sc with the 915 box and would say without a doubt, dont be put off, once you get the knack they are very satisfying to use. I have only had mine since last July and during the winter I fitted Swepco 201 gearbox oil and fitted new bushes to the gear linkage behind the front seats and the bushes below the gearstick linkage and it has transformed the box (for a total of around £50), some say it is a very strong box compared to that of the G50 type and was preferred for competition use in the 80's because it was so robust, no to mention it is part of owning one of these fantastic 911's, makes you feel at one with the machine if you like, I love it.

Older boxes are slower, so best not rushed.

Short shifts are usually not successful on early boxes as they tend to increase the load and can feel quite baulky.

These 915 boxes are:-

clutch foot to the floor-change gear-release clutch

it aint quick and theres no way to rush them. Remember nobody moans about them in £60k 2.7 carreras. Worn gearboxes need to be treated very slowly, a rebuilt gearbox is pleasant to use but certainly not fast like a modern car.

With plenty of practice it all becomes second nature. These are lightweight gearboxes designed by Porsche, the G50 is heavy, dont be put off by a 915 car

thanks guys i think i found my new car then, a 1977 2.7 911, it looks fantastic now to close the deal and drive it [:D].
