Early 911 Purchase

Guest

New member

Hi, I am interested in purchasing a pre-76 911. I haven't previously owned a 911 and am hoping to get some advice. I don't really know where to start. My budget is about £10-11,000. I am located in Cork, Ireland.

I'm not sure exactly what would be the best way to decide which model and source a car which will be hopefully be frequently used, but as a second car. It may be the case that a good early car can't be bought for this price. I have seen some for sale but am not sure whether these would be desireable/useful models.

Any comments and / or information would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Ciaran . . good to speak to you last night, welcome to the club and forum.

For £10-11K you're not going to find a solid S (if you do, please let me know [;)]) . . so an early 2lt, T or E is the way to go, remembering that it all comes down to condition. Nick's source could be worth a look.

Below I've detailed some useful websites . . . the first two should help you decide what car you're actually after . . T,E,S / Coupe or Targa etc. The rest will have cars for sale (hopefully). Buying from a dealer isn't obviously going to be the cheapest way . . so keep an eye on the classified ads . . . Targa's will be cheaper but are becoming more desirable IMHO . . . left hookers will also be cheaper (mine's LHD and I've no problems drivving it . . but every LHD owner would say that wouldn't they).

Hi Ciaran,
Welcome to pcgb.
I'm up in Donegal, and also searching for a classic 911.

Phil's list of links is perfect.. I spent ages googling to come across these sites.
Some good reading is Paul Frere's "the 911 story" and also Peter Morgans book (cant remember the naem right now) is very good reading.

best of luck in your search.

Declan

Thanks Declan,

How are things in Donegal? Are there any classic 911's up around there or would you think that you'll have to got to England or further a field for one? Have you narrowed down your seach to a particular model?

Regards,

Ciaran

Hi Ciaran,
Donegal is wet & windy, as usual !
I've only seen one 911 in donegal here in the past year - That is a 1998 C2 (I think).

For a rhd, i think we are limited to UK, Australia or South Africa.. I cant find any info about locating 911's in either australia or SA, but I'm sure its possible.

I started off last year looking for a 1974 model, as this would be 30 yrs and vrt exempt .. cheap road tax, etc. I was being steered more towards the pre'73 styling, but looking at the rhd prices recently they are getting very pricey. The 2.2S and 2.4S models are crazy money .. The lowest Ive seen a rhd 2.2S was around 23K sterling recently. Some have being selling over 30K stg.
The E's seem to be around the 18-20k mark, and T's are a few K less.

I'm now back to looking for a 74 or 75 911 Lux or 911S, but these seem to be few and far between.

As for the 210bhp Carrera from 74/75 I havent seen a rhd one of those for sale since last october/november. I guess they must be being backdated as 73 RS replicas, as I know there is/was big demand for those, and they had the same engine (mabye not identical, but pretty much the same)

There are some very clued-up folks both on this forum and on ddk-online.com who can fill you much better than I could on the pros and cons of each type, and market values, etc.

In the January edition of "911 & Porsche World" magazine there was an early 911 buyers guide, which I thought was quite good, as it covered most of what I learned over the previous few months of surfing.

Good luck in your search, and let me know if you find anything interesting that you dont want for yourself !

Declan,

There is a nice 1975 coupe for sale on pauldevyea.co.uk website at the moment.

http://www.pauldevyea.co.uk/cars/1975coupe/individualvisual.htm

I have looked at autotrader.co.za from time to time before.

I'm not sure about the logistics of importing a car from South Africa though.

Ciaran,
Yes, I spotted that one just last week.
Looks fabulous, only 60k miles in 30 years !!
Although, it is said that low miles isnt necessarily good ... or is that the later 3.0 types which are pretty much bulletproof ?.... I've read that they actually improve with miles, but mabye thats salesman speak ! Doesnt make sense to me.

It is a bit pricey though at 16k stg.

Thanks for the pointer .. keep 'em coming !

Cheers,
Declan

Hi Ciaran

got your mail... i'll reply later on.

Best advice in the short term is to take your time....read alot and talk to current owners and previous owners. It is an ablsoute mind field............... there are alot of sharks out there...more bad guys than good ones!!!!!!!!!

I would not restrict your search to RHD...LHD are better value..especially around your budget. There are early 911's around Dublin........ some good and others not so.

Chat to ya later...but remember buyer beware!!
