Early Cars

As of Tuesday I am now a proud owner of an early 944, a 1983 model, in black.

This current car is my 6th and most favourite Porsche I have owned :) What a difference to the later, oval dash cars? It is so much more fun to drive and feels much more like a "classic" car.

I still have my gold 85.5 oval dash car but I think it'll be put up for sale soon :)

Had mine for about 2 years and can't wait until April when all the little jobs are done and we are back on the road together.

Oli's 944 blondies are getting me through (I feel an alternative thread coming now !!)

The early cars do have a charm missing in the later ones. As you say, more a classic car. People tend to compare the later cars with more modern machinery, and then find fault. The early cars stand up very well to other cars designed in the '70s.

We did try to get loads of 1982 cars to Silverstone for their 25th birthday, but sadly all but a few were no longer around. I think there were about thirty in the Register, but only about twelve were still running and in the Club. Good early cars are well worth looking after, they are becoming a rarity now. [&o]

My early car is an '83, not an '82 but I don't think that matters.

Where do I find what events are happening in the club? I'm a fairly active TIPEC member but 6 Porsches in I think I should see what the PCGB have to offer? My membership for TIPEC has ran out and I'm not sure whether to renew or sign up with you guys or ... do both. My other half probably won't be happy if I spend over £100 on Porsche club membership per year though [:)]!

When I got mine I had a choice of an 83 or an 87 and after driving both came to the conclusion that the 87 was a better choice for me to use as a daily driver. The lack of power steering on the early one was the deciding factor.

Mrs zcacogp made another batch last weekend, and they didn't last beyond Monday night ... [&:]

(Shame. I'd love another one now!)

I still have my 85.5 oval dash and my 83 early dash, I prefer the early car by a mile ... each to their own I suppose. I use mine everyday, do you like a more "modern" driving experience? I prefer to drive a classic car. :)

I wouldn't say it was a more modern driving experience.... the bonus of power-steering swung it for me due to being easier to park at home and at work.

I had a good test drive in both 944's (100+ miles in both) and personally I found the later model a better driving experience. I chose the right one because I have had 2 years of trouble free motoring out of mine, whereas the early one suffered major engine problems a couple of months later.
