Ebay - petrol tank

It could be an 85 litre tank, which accomodated a space-saver spare. Fitted to some 72/73 RSs. If so, could be reasonably sought after.

I agree with the first Oliver . . . . it's defo designed to take a spacesaver . . . in which case, if it's a early tank . . . is pretty rare.

However . . . I reckon it's from a later car.

The tank on ebay is steel. my '73 tank from my 2.4S is plastic. I assume the RS's are plastic too except the UK spec cars that required a different fuel tank?

The 85L plastic tank was fitted to the majority of '73 RS models (including UK RHD spec models) although in certain markets (such as Japan) it wasn't legal so a steel tank was fitted in its place.

The plastic tank was also an option in '73 for European S & E models - hence its fitment to James' Italian spec S.

The 85 litre plastic tank was fitted to my 1973 2.4S and when full didn't half make the steering heavy but I could almost get to Stuttgart from Luton on a tank full!!
I eventually cracked the plastic tank on a rough road in France and have since replaced it with a steel 80 litre tank which has much more ground clearance. The space saver wheel fits into both the 80 and 85 litre tanks.
One point to note that the steel tank is not painted, it is only coated with the grey stone chip type of schutz, the tank rusts happily under the stone chip coating, especially at the joint where the top and bottom are joined together. Look after your tank.
