I'll help you out if you aren't sure....

That car is not an 'S'. they were only manufactured in 87 and 88. The offset on the wheels is wrong for the 'S', although the oval dash is correct. The most telling of all is the engine bay.... Not a 16 valve engine.
The rear valance is not a turbo valance either.

Trades Misdiscriptions Act anyone?

I see it also has both air con AND climate control [:D]

A bargain. I'll have 2 please.....

James

It also has anti locking brakes.... Not with that wheel offset it doesn't.

Not sure what the additional gauge is under the tacho but I bet the replacment speedo is off a turbo.

RAC vehicle check says its a 944 not 944 S.

Definitely not an S. 86 oval dash lux's had an economy gauge there, basically a vacuum gauge. Could you get those seats in 86?
Tony

That seat shape was available in '86 (launched in '85 I believe) but I'm not sure when logo cloth launched. '86 cars usually had pinstripe velour. They look grey rather than black so my guess is they are not original. There are no pics of the back seat to check it matches.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]It is a reasonably nice looking early oval dash Lux with OK miles, unverifiable service history (bar 1 receipt) and a recent respray (what's underneath? Painted rubber on the back bumper doesn't bode well for it being a sympathetic respray and while I can't be sure I don't think it has the clear stickers to protect from stone chips). The seller doesn't know much about them hence it isn't an S, has no ABS, a non-Turbo valance as had been said plus it does not have premium audio. Worst it's been messed about with slightly so has a non-standard wheel and gear knob, no rear wiper and is LHD. I think £1,500 or 2 Corsas (assuming they are standard) is about right to be honest. Air is good but doesn't compensate for the wheel being on the wrong side etc.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

That one would suggest that the other may have original seats then, albeit that I know grey wasn't around until 1991.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]It looks OK aside not being an S from my brief scan. Maybe £2,395 worth but only just. It needs bigger spacers to make the rear wheels sit right (or does it have 7" D90's on the back as well as the front?)[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I thought the square dash cars had different shape seats altogether, but I haven't seen that many to know if this was the case to the end of their life.
Tony

The very early 3.2 Carreras had the square seats - they were '83A. My '85B had the rounded ones. I thought maybe they came out in Sep 85 for the MY85 cars but maybe it was before that?

I think anyone who has spent as much time as most of the people on this forum have starring at the engine bay spanner in hand chanting ' Ich weiß nicht' you pretty much know your Lux from your S. There again don't ask me what the difference is between the 'Beetle' with the 2.7 engine and one with a 3.2 engine. Not my scene. (If I wan't my backside bitten off mid corner I would ride a crocodile).

I am pretty sure it is this car that is advertised in the classifieds in this month's Practical Classics mag for £4,300.

Also '85; that shape with logo cloth is the same as my 924.

I know this questions nearly as good as "how long is a piece of string?" but how good are the cars advertised on ebay?

I got mine from Autobahn and "paid" for it but I know it a good car and been well cared for. I shudder sometimes though when I see what look like good cars going for less than half what I paid for mine. Whose the dummy - me or the people who buy the ebay listed cars?

Prices for a good 944 seem to vary quite widely according to the owner's knowledge of values or imperative to sell the car. I bought mine on impulse for 'peanuts' via an Autotrader ad; absolutely stonking condition, FSH with OPCs/independents etc. etc. but was well aware at the time I went to look at it that, for that money, it could well have been a stinker.

I think the only additional risk on eBay is in the ease with which one can effectively buy a car without ever having seen it in the metal. I've seen a small number of outstanding Porsches on there over the years (a particular 911 and 928 stand out in the memory) although more often there are question marks over certain areas. In light of the severely restricted copyspace on sites like Autotrader I would suggest eBay is actually one of the better ways in which to buy a car via the 'classifieds', as the unlimited text/pictures mean buyers can weed out undesirable cars or vendors much more easily.

Buying from a recognised Porsche specialist is always going to give you that peace-of-mind factor which some of us need, but it's always surprising to me how many 'FrontRunners' seem to end up with dealers who know absolutely nothing about the marque - in which case I would greatly prefer to go private and purchase from an enthusiast.
