EBC V PAGID V ? Help!

I run RS29 Pagid Yellow on my race car and they are mostly great except that at £550 a set they are bl00dy expensive and even though they are endurance pads they only last 2 or 3 meetings. They have also killed my OEM discs which are now glazed and cracked. I did have Pagid Blacks for one meeting but they were knackered by the end of the weekend, as were the discs which had been seriously worn down.

I'm racing at Brands this Saturday so in preparation I'm fitting some new OEM discs and need to some new pads so I was thinking of trying something different such as EBC Yellows.

Does anyone have any experience of both types of pad and can give me an unbiased opinion on which is best ?

Are there any other pads I could consider ?

I do need to order them tomorrow.....

Hi Richard,

You might remember last year at the Oulton Park race that Marcus (the Goose) had a good lead in the first race and lost his brakes. He'd swapped from his normal Pagid option to Performance friction because they were half the cost. A lesson learned (even though he probably won't admit it [;)]). I've no experience of EBC myself but have heard that they have no where near the same heat tolerance of Pagids. I've been using Pagids (grey RS15 in my case) and have yet to have them fade on a trackday. I know they are very expensive but they could be the difference between winning and losing in your case.

Yes, Marcus has a bit of a lead foot when it comes to braking. He swopped to Pagid Yellows for the second race but still had a problem with the brakes going off.

Oulton is tough on brakes and that was were I managed to do the damage to my discs through overheating. The pads did last quite well though and I didn't have any major fade.

I would like to hear from someone that has tried EBC in anger before I take the plunge and buy the Pagids. They are £400 cheaper which is significant!

I've only ever had EBC on a fast Pug on the road and did not rate them at all so not relevant (think they were having QC and consistency issues with the compounds). Still not tempted to try them again despite the price!

Currently I'm running Pagid Yellows on Big Reds and they're worth every penny of the £400 they cost me. The cheapest supplier I found was ASPerformance (Alyn), in fact I've not known anyone cheaper since I started fitting pagids to my Impreza 5 or 6 years ago (after the standard fronts started smoking heavily after a brief "spirited" drive [8D] ).

Good luck in your quest....

As no one has anything to say about EBCs on a 964 and time is running out I've bitten the bullet and stuck with the RS29's, got 10% off the price so at least that can go towards the set of tyres I also need.... another £980..... eek !

Thanks Steve.

I hope I make it there as the car has been at Jaz all day waiting for Porsche to deliver the new discs but no sign of them so far! Lets hope they arrive tomorrow morning so they have time to fit them.

It's my fault I suppose for only deciding to enter the race last weekend so as usual everything is a rush!

Jaz have been great, fitting the car in at such sort notice so I feel guilty that Porsche have messed them around today.

It'll be interesting to see if the Porsche branded discs last better than OEM. I've been using the Sebro discs that Type911 supply. They've stood up to my Pagid RS15s (two sets) for about a dozen trackdays now. Mind you....I don't go at the same sort of pace that you boys do [:D]

I asked the guys who service my 964 about fitting EBC as my rear pads are due for replacement. They don't rate them at all and would rather fit OEM, although mine is only used on road.

I have EBC yellows on my 964RS, and had pagid before (blacks I think). I use it for a mix of road and trackdays and the yellows are fine. They don't quite have the same "bite" as the pagids, but the power is there and I have not had them fade at all. If costs were equal, I would have pagids, but for the massive saving on EBC I accept a little compromise. One of the other reasons I chose them is they don't squeal anywhere near as much, which is important where I live. NB don't bother with redstuff they are not up to the job.
regards

Steve, I wasn't going to do the meeting but then got the chance to make up the numbers in the GT3 Challenge race for a greatly reduced entry fee so I thought why not. I was hoping for some competition in the class but it was just me in the end, so two wins and two fastest laps !
I used it as a test session and tried out a few different lines and changing the corner entry speed etc so I did find it very useful. My pace was good too so based on my lap times I'd have been in the top 4 of the Club race which is nice to know.

The brakes were good for the entire race, I used them quite hard and didn't have any problems at all. It would have been interesting to try the EBC yellows but I may save that for a test day sometime.

As for the brake set up, I have standard OEM discs with RS29 Pagid yellows all round. No brake cooling other than the scoops where the driving lights normally go. I think I'll put in some ducting soon as the brakes to get very hot and that may be why I wreaked the last set of discs.
