ECU Modifications

Can anyone please the downfall, if any, of installing a modified chip into the ECU of my 1988 3.2.with 107 k miles on the clock

It adds 10 to 15 BHP more plus 22 N/m2 of torque, which me is a major plus point, all for £230 fitted.

Is there a catch, can tho engine take it or will there be bits all over the road ?

Am doing a track day very soon, would it be ok to fit it before ?

Thanks,

Tim

Hi Tim,
I had a Steve Wong chip in my previous 911, which was basically standard chip modified to give a better performance curve etc. It made the car smoother with a better throttle response. I know you can get ones designed to increase all sorts of things including higher rev limits and Its those which I believe can result in over stressing the engine. This is a good place for advive so I am sure you will get some good recommendations.

I also went steve wong and had a custom service chip. He sent a best guess then I sent him the data from my lm2 for an exact match on the engine. The chip and exhaust were probably the only real enhancing mods I've made to the car(except for rebuilding it)! Well worth a couple of hundred quid!

Hi

I have a Steve Wong chip fitted to my 1987 3.2. thats has done over 150000 miles and never been apart. The chip mainly smooths out throttle response and pick up so it is much better than standard. I have a spare one that I could sell because I had an upgrade because of sports exhaust etc and higher rev limit.
My spare chip is for standard rev limit and normal fuel not higher octane.PM if you are interested.
Check out Steves site for more info and how to D I Y fit.
The Steve Wong chip is regarded as one of the best to fit to a 3.2

Hi Don,

Thanks for the advice and offer, but am having the chip done by local guy plus mods to injection and rolling road on Friday,

Rregards,

Tim

I've done both live and postal remaps. Steve Wong did a great job on my Targa, but you have to keep dynoing and having a new (albeit free) chip burned to get the best results. It worked - I ended up with 255bhp and 245lb's/ft.

This time I've gone down the live tuner route with Wayne Schofield of Chipwizards in Rochdale 01706 651000 as my car is a bit special. The thing with a personal visit like this is that he's able to diagnose a bunch of other stuff that may be contributing towards lower performance; on mine he found the injectors needed upgrading to cope with the flow rates needed to prevent the engine running lean for example. Not strictly relevant to you, but you get my point. Wayne is very busy and can be difficult to get hold of so if you go that route be patient. As he said -"Would you want me to stop working on your car to answer the phone?" fair point.

A live map is always best IMHO as it takes into account the specific configuration of your 911. More expensive, but worth every penny....Make sure you ahve a good engine to start with though. Have a compression and leakdown done first.
