ECU re-map(Not the usual where to get one!)

I'm confused. When a car leaves the factory it comes with a standardised mapping covering, performance, fuel economy and emission restrictions. So how comes if you have an ECU re-map (allegedly) you get increased power out put, increased economy (driving style pending), an increase to the red line point of a few hundred revs yet still complies to emissions. Why do they not leave the factory with an optimum programme? I'm obviously not getting the point?

Re-map isnt an issue as I had one a number of years ago, more curiosity to the reasons behind! How do you get more horses, more torque and a potential mpg increase?

Mike M,

The emissions regs that the car has to comply with when it leaves the factory are more severe than the MOT requirements it subsequently has to meet once registered. This gives the aftermarket mapper more room to play with. Also, the factory map is optimised across a range of fuels with.

+! just take a standard 993 to Wayne Schofield at Chips Wizards , Rochdale and u ll have the answer in abt 3 hrs ...............mid range performance unrecogniseable

I gather Wayne is the 'chip wizard' but it's 4hrs from me. Anywhere down south as good??
