ECU remapping

Has anyone had their 993 remapped? Was it an off-the-shelf replacement or bespoke remap? How much did you pay? The reason that I ask is that I have recently had new Maxspeed silencers and Dach-X 200-cell sports cats fitted and want to make the most of these modifications. 9tuning offer an off-the-shelf chip for £199+VAT and I was wondering whether any forum members had experience of this, or other vendors. I have had off-the-shelf chips on previous (non-Porsche) cars and have always been disappointed. The best gains were from bespoke rolling road remaps but I guess that would be pretty difficult with our ECUs as it literally is a chip replacement rather than an OBD reprogramming operation. AMD used to have the facility to replace the ROM with a RAM based emulator and map on the fly and then burn the resulting map into an EEPROM while-u-waited but I guess places don't do that anymore.

BTW induction is standard with a drilled airbox. Any experiences greatly appreciated

I bought an aftermarket chip, it made a tiny difference mainly at max revs. Also added 250 rpm to the rev limiter. A live rolling road map is the only way to go as all engines are different. Best of luck

I don't believe in mail order chip tuning. You better invest in a driver's training if you want to be faster.

Was very impressed with Wayne (chips wizard??? Rochdale).......at least 4 hours (min)on rolling road...... it was freezing !!!!....made hell of diff.....worth the drive......good day out ... not cheap though

Wayne is a true chipping hero, spent over half a day on my car and fixed the LWF stalling issue (I have a 95 car) as well as making the engine incredibly smooth and keeping all the ponies intact (I changed the heat exchangers (what heat?) from NGT back to std (toastie)) and wanted to maintain all the ponies I captured with the Billet head conversion. I cannot recommend him highly enough, a true technical Guru on 993's and I do not say that lightly and a totally decent chap as well. Don't even think of going elsewhere

For those of you that have used Wayne do you know what's involved with going back to standard again if you want? Do you have to go back to Wayne or is it a DIY? Ian.

Ian, wayne keeps a copy of original programme and will reflash your eprom, or if you ask him I am sure he will give you two chips, one being his custom remap and one the original, 5 mins to undo 4 bolts, pull the top of the ecu and plug in the new chip. I would have no idea why you would want to go back tho? It is either a good map or not and you will no instantly on the RR so wouldn't know why you wanted to go back? when I changed my exhaust I went back to wayne and he had the original map the map with my big bore NGT system and then he tweaked a new map for the NGT plus original headers (plus main advantage was the solving the stalling and making the engine as smooth as whipped cream) bearing in mind it had already been mapped up to 340 - 350 HP. New heads, cams, valves, exhaust. Yes I need treatment, no I don't want a modern mass produced GT3, just an old, beautiful, hand produced, hewn from granite, air cooled car with character and GT3 performance (which I now have, but no cash!).

Thanks that's good to know. I agree you wouldn't want to go back but I have wondered before whether you could hence the question. Also my car is completely original with not a single mod (I know I know but I have other cars to indulge spending money on) so it would be good to have the option to have a second original chip. Ian.

He is the remap man behind 9m maps, since they are a MoTec agent and use MoTec on many of their cars, i would think he is very knowledgabel, but don't have personal experience of him working on MoTec. I do know he has done lots of mapping for various race cars and teams in the past and I rate him very highly. He is also very straight so ask him, if he says yes he won't be lying.
