ECU Remapping

Has anyone had ECU remapping done? I have a 996 C4S and am interested.
If so, how has it affected performance and fuel economy?

I also own a C4S and have been looking at ECU remap costs and benefits for the last few months. I have very broad prices and some indicate a filter upgrade is also worthwhile. So I would also be very interested in recommendations etc.

No one has mentioned the filter change to me, but prices seem to hover around £400 - £450 + 20% VAT, which makes it very expensive to my mind.

+ any increase your insurance company demands.

BUT... the biggest cost is the hidden one of much greater depreciation and difficulty when you come to sell. IMHO.

But the maps can be easily put back to their original state as most reputable tuners take a copy of your original map before remapping anyway.

There are loads of threads on pistonheads discussing the various remap options -Fearnsport in Silverstone seem to have a good reputation.

I h ave been quoted £349 from e-maps and others as much as £800!
E-maps recon 320bhp up to 340bhp and the torque from 370nm up to 390nm and better fuel economy. They claim their software has been developed on a rolling road at their development centre in Germany. And can be easily reset back. And they will do the upgrade at your home or place of work. For a warranty they give warranty on the software applied to the ECU for as long as you own the car even if the OEM service resets it at any stage. My feeling was 20BHP is probably enough to feel some difference and gets my 996 a little closer to the stock 997 3.8 355 BHP level. Worse case I can get it rolled back. plus £349 is a slightly cheaper option than spending out on a 997 C4S car upgrade? lol

Even if you can reset your ECU you still wear the engine more than with stock.

Remember if you get Porsches own tuning pack they also do an ECU flash, it's just that they also install reinforced hardware to your engine for about £10 000 worth to make it reliable. [;)]

Had my 04my c4 remapped by Superchips last year. Cost about £300. Power increase is said to be about 20bhp which is mainly felt from 4,000 rpm upwards. The main difference is the smoothness of the engine. I havent noticed a great improvement in economy and I cant see that a mild increase of 20 bhp is going to wear your engine out.
Did try a power run on the dyno at zcars but the electronics on the car kept cutting power as they could tell there was something fishy going on even with psm button off, hence couldnt get a power reading. My mate however had his Boxster S done by Superchips and dynoed his, the results were just as quoted- exactly 20 hp gain on standard.

Hope this helps,

Chris
