ECU Remapping...

Is the Boxster S 986 ECU map really that far out as stock that up to a 19bhp / 31Nm of torque can be gained from a generic map swap? Is this at all realistic? Is this a true restriction of the engine by Porsche to hold back the 986? I guess not as the same power increase is listed for the 911's too. I was under the impression that Porsche used a decent adaptive ECU that would advance ignition very accurately using live feedback from the knock sensor. If this is the case, then surely there would be next to no gain from altering the ignition fields and I would guess Porsche to be running a fuel mixture on wide open throttle to take full advantage of the power available?

Does anyone have any experience of mapping a standard Boxster or 911? I am more curious than anything.

i looked into it with my 987 s and your info is correct-there seems to be virtually no usable benfit in a pure remap of either boxster or 997nonturbo--it needs other stuff to really get some more horses-then it needs better suspension, brakes etc-see tom okellys entries in the 997 section for a good appraisal.

I had my 2000 S remapped ealier in the year. Took overall power from 254 to 275 - nothing startling, but mid range seemed to be improved.
Some remappers do offer to carry out with a dyno for results.
Do some digging and judge what different remappers answers lead to.
