Electric Mirrors

Evening chaps have been doing some work on one of my electric mirrors and have found out that the plastic drive rods that move it inside are broken. The rest of the mechanism including the motors are all fine. I am guessing this may be a common fault looking at the fragfility of the plastic bits. Does anyone know if these toothed rods can be bought seperately or will I have to purchase a complete mechanism. Also I realise the mirrors are heated but have doubts as to whether they are working or not. Is it apparent when they do? On previous cars I have had the mirrors wre actually warm to touch. I know there is a resistor for them but where is it? Perhaps sulzeruk could answer as I see you have one for sale Alisdair [:D]

Heated mirrors come on with the rear de-mister. Mine get pretty warm within a minute or so. I always thought these were a bit of a gimmick but actually very useful for de-misting/ de-icing in winter.

Thanks guys will check them with the demister on. I don't use it that much on the way to work at the mo as it makes my polyrib belt squeek with the extra load lol (I know I should change it). Any ideas where the resistor is if they are not working? I know they share the same fuse as the demister so that should be ok.

Hi Rob, I would presume the resistor is in series with the rear screen if they work together to get a sufficient voltafe drop. I would need to check a wiring diagram to see if that is the case though. Is th rear screen demisting Rob? I have a selection of other mirrors which have been split of glasses, etc so sending some rods should be no problem. How many do you need??

There are two per mirror mate so would need them both. They are only a couple of tiny bits of placcy about 2cm long. I think they have probably been broken by previous owners moving or rather forcing the mirror by hand.

Rob, I extracted a pair of rods in working shape for you so PM me your address and I'll drop them in the post for you,
Alasdair
