Electric Seat Problem - The Only Way Is Up(!)

All,

Well, if it's not one thing it's another... My driver's side electric seat has started playing up. One of the switches now operates in one direction only, which is up, and consequently I now have a very high driving position. Great for sliding off the seat under braking, or banging my head against the roof trim when cornering...!

Does anyone have any experience of this, and any suggestions where to start? From my memory of the 944 seats (which I believe are identical), the electric switch and the wiring all the way through to the connector at the motor end is one piece (i.e. no chocolate strip, etc.) and is therefore quite awkward to fault test.

Any help appreciated!

Cheers/John

If its any consolation, I have the same problem.

With my car, its the front adjustment on the drivers side, which will lower the seat but not raise it.

I have found its possible to put extra weight on the back of the seat at the same time as operating the switch, I can then raise the seat squab to the correct height. This is OK for me, but causes a problem when my wife drives the car as we both have different driving positions.

Hi John,

How handy are you with a soldering iron? It is possible to unscrew the switch housing from the seat, then unsolder the wires from the back of the switch (after noting down which wires go where!) - then the switch can be dismantled, cleaned internally and put back together.

HTH,

Jim.

All,

Thanks for the responses - I guess I'll whip the seat out at the weekend and take a look. Who knows, it might be an easy fix for once...

Cheers/John

I had this last month, it was the switch contacts were carbonized and black. To fix I removed the seat and removed the switch complete with wiring loom all the way back to the connector then, if you are careful, you can prize open the switch itself (taking care not to lose the spring and ball bearings) It is the fairly easy to clean the switch contacts.

If you need more info pm me.

Hope this helps.

I had this problem too but lost the two ball bearings from inside the switch when trying to repair it.
It seems the switch is usually the culprit. In the end I de-soldered the contacts from the switch (having taken many photos first to make sure i knew which colour went where) ordered a new switch £35approx and refitted it. It now works a treat.

I had a similar problem with my 968 seats; it was simply dirty contacts in the switch: I prised the cover off the switch and carefully threaded a thin strip of wet/dry sand paper between all the contacts inside- if you're careful, you don't need to dismantle the switch. It worked fine after that.

Every time I read one of these posts about niggles like this, the same inevitably happens to my car about a week later!!! [:D] Least I'll now have an idea on when the seat switches pack up!
