Electric Sunroof removal

Hi,

I have a 1986 944 Turbo with an electric sunroof. As the sun is out! I would like to take advantage and remove the electric roof panel. Can anyone advise how to do it?

Cheers.

JB

Carefully! With the ignition on but the engine not running, hold the switch in the "close sunroof" position. The lugs which normally secure the roof will then retract into the roof. My manual says to lift the sunroof panel until it is vertical and simply lift it out. The tricky part for me was putting it back in... It's quite heavy and far easier with two people. There have been previous threads on this forum which are very helpful too. Enjoy the sunshine!

Not ignition on but not running. Ignition at position 1 (radio on but no dash lights) is the one you want.

Opinion seems to be divided on the worth of taking it out. Personally it gives me a headache as it sets up a resonance of changing air pressure in the cabin at speed. I guess if you are not going to go over about 50 or 60mph it might be different, or maybe playing with the deflector helps, though I'm sure I tried that. Regardless it feels absoluetely nothing like being in a proper convertible.

Playing with the deflector certainly helps, if you move it up when the resonance starts it will go away, you need to be sure not to push up too far as this increases the wind noise too much.

I love taking the roof out (except at the moment its not working properly) and you tend to draw a (very) small crowd each time you take it out or replace it!!

oops, sorry, Fen is right...mine is broken anyway and works with the ignition in any position or indeed with the engine running! this did catch me out the first time i used it causing a brief panic as it lifted up on the M6! Fen is also right about the unpleasant buffetting - playing with the deflector works or opening the window a fraction but having experimented once I've left mine in place.

I had my top off yesterday [:D] It's brilliant

Correction - technically as it's my wifes car, it was her top I had off []

Seems like a good time to jump in with a couple of questions.
Mine has blown a fuse twice in the last month. Likely culprit?
Also, when it is working, I have to be careful when I operate it as after having it cracked open and then closing it, the securing levers will come all the way back if I am not careful and it then flaps up and down in the wind! I have to manually move the locking levers forward using the button to what I judge is the best position. Is this due to a faulty relay?

PS To take it out you have to unclip at the two clips at the front as well.

There's a good guide to adjusting those microswitches in the 'garage shop manual' at www.clarks-garage.com

Mine went out of whack a few years ago in exactly the same way and it took a few hours of fiddling to get it right again. It's just started to do the same thing again, but it's not annoying me enough yet to re-adjust it [:D]
