Electric window not operating

JB 3.2

New member
Had a great weekend at the Britcar 24 hour race, the only downside is the nearside (passenger) electric window has stopped operating.

The window failed while in the fully closed position and will not operate on either passenger or drivers side switch. I cannot hear the motor working so it sounds like an electrical fault.

Drivers side window works fine and I think there is only the one fuse for both windows which is OK.

Are there any known faults, or areas where I should start looking for the fault?

Usually it are the switches that fail.
All 3 switches are the same, so you can swap to check.
Use a small screwdriver to get them out of the door panel.

I was going to say the same as M030. Try swapping the switches around cause if one of the two switches for the passenger window has failed it won't work

I might be wrong but the way they are wired may mean its not quite as obvious swapping the switches as you might think - as current routes through both switches (hence one fuse). When I had the problem if you pull the switches out in turn, they have got a wiring diagram on the switch itself - if you pull the terminals off and carefully link the appropriate ones with a bit of fairly heavy duty wire and then try the switch on the other side you can find out very quickly if the switch is us

Sorry Nick, think you will find all the switches are the same, Porsche only list one part number.

I had the same problem with my passenger window not working, packed up a week after I bought the car. I changed one switch which had fallen apart inside, the plastic pivot pins break and the contacts all fall to bits so check here first.

Mine turned out to be the motor, I fixed this just before Silverstone Classic (the wife had to put up with it not working for a year!! but thought with the good weather it was time to give her a window that opened). I digress, it is not an easy job to fit a new motor, you have to undo all the linkage fasteners then twist and fiddle the assembly to get to the motor fasteners. you will need a torx type drive to undo the motor screws, once you get to these then it is not too bad. Just take care that the window glass does not drop and trap your fingers.

Thank you all for your observations, unfortunately it doesn't appear to be either of the switches.

I found the most logical way to test the switches was to try each switch in the 'good' working window, they were both able to operate the window indicating the switches were OK.

When the ignition is on and I try to operate the faulty window, I can hear the brake air pump slow slightly suggesting some current is being taken via the switch.

If as Andy B indicates it is the motor which has failed, are these a serviceable item or is it a case of purchasing a new one?..
