Electric Windows Blowing 30 amp Fuse

Well the title says the end result...but...

for some months the passenger window would not always wind up, and when they do work that fuse blows at some stage after the windows are closed. Replacing the fuse works for a few hours but then burns out. But it has never blown DURING operation[8|]...

Would you think it more likely a mechanical fault...or electrical?

Where might be the best place to start looking?

It could be as simple as the motor is drawing too much current due to a stiff mechanism therefore blowing your fuse. You could try lubricating the machanism and runners as it is common for these to loose their lubrication over time and become stiff.

You may find that the best way to free off the mechanism is to actually remove it completely from the door and get it somewhere so it can be held in a vice in order to work the hinge free. This will also allow you to use a bit of heat on it. You don't have to get them red hot but warm enough so that oil (WD40) sizzles when you spray it on. A butane burner similar to those used for soldering plumbing joints is fine). Getting them warm also allows grease to be applied and the grease will run into those hard to get at places. Whilst you have the window out you can now give it a really good clean in that area that never appears above the rubber seals.
When you replace the window squirt some washing up liquid onto the side runners.
Getting everything working freely should prevent those fuses blowing again.
Moral of the story is regular spraying with WD40 and spray grease.
Cheers,

Thanks Fred and Scott, I`ll start with freeing-up the mechanicals and see if that takes some of the load off the electricals.
Many thanks.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but I'm having this exact same problem on my car.

Before I remove the door panels and get lubricating, Keith can you tell me if you have much luck with this and if it cured your problem?

Thanks

Keiths profile says he hasn't logged on since July so I don't think he uses the forum anymore [:(]

Arrrg, just thought, who is going to organise the 2008 Hastings run?

Oh bugger! Thanks Paul. Oh well.. Guess I'll lubricate the motors, check the door wiring and see what I can determine.

Rubber piece protecting my door wires had slipped out (its also very perished). I was horrified to see a number of wires sheathing. This was causing the windows to short. Managed to wrap insulation tape around as many of the now exposed wires as I could, bundled the whole lot with more insulation tape, shoved in the rubber piece into the aperture as good as I could and finally replaced the window fuse (again). Lets hope thats it all sorted now.
