Electric windows on 3.2 Carrera

Passenger electric window motor stopped working on my 87 coupe, neither side switch works, driver's side OK. Any obvious tips before I start dismantling the door??

Isn't that a coincidence, I have exactly the same problem right now. I've checked the fuses but they seem OK so any help would be appreciated

Hope there is someone with a solution

There are quite a few wires on the back of the window switches that just plug in to the switch itself... maybe a loose / broken or coroded wire???? just a thought.

Hi

I had the very same problem, and after dismantling the door, trying the motor on its own, then tracing the wiring, it turned out to be part of the UK alarm (didn't even realise I had one). At the time I used the forum to identify the 'black box' that was at fault - see here

http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=217911&mpage=1&key=&#217911

I got a replacement black box from the manufacturer, and it has worked perfectly since.

I tested the black box being the problem by swapping the left and right window connector around (make sure you know which connector is which - there are three) and triying the passenger window - and it worked.

If you need any more information or pictures please let me know.

Hi Anthony,

Where is the black box, you refer to, to be found; is it in the door or somewhere near the fusebox or where??

Awaiting your news

Hi

The 'black box', and that is exactly what it is, a plastic project box approx 4x2x1 inch, is in the front boot (under the bonnet) behind the bulkhead cover (with all the other wires etc) Mine was on the drivers side

I has 3 cables coming out of it (of 4 wires each if I remember correctly), with three plugs , one to each of the window switches, and another that I cannot remember from where.

Mine has a paper adhesive sticker on it with the part number (as per the original post).

I will endevour to get some photos and post them here.

Hope this helps

Hi

Some pictures of the box

...and these are the 3 cables with connectors. You'll see I labelled the two windows connections D and P (driver and passenger).

To test if this box is the problem, I swapped the driver and passenger around.

Hi Anthony.
Fantastic advice, what an amazing 3.2 register. only been a member for six months, I'm attempting the job on the weekend, (now not as the sublimely ignorant) and will keep everyone posted.

Hi Anthony,

I have a Thacham ! immobiliser fitted to my car, will this affect the wiring of the window closer and the original UK alarm fittings. I looked in the area you mentioned but only found a box similar to the one you show bit it had only 2 cables( one with 5 wires the otherwith two) running out of it not three as in your photos

Any ideas or comments please

Regards

Hi

Alan, I hope you have had a successful weekend.

Adam, it is possible that a new alarm might replace the black box - does your alarm close the windows? My car had had another alarm fitted, and the fitter had just disabled the Porache fitted alarm, leaving much of the wiring intact.

Hi Anthony,

I have one of those alarms that closes the cab roof and locks everything, I suspect it closes the windows as well but I have not seen it done. I think I will have to start at the winder motors and work towards the fuses etc; a job for next week- end probably

Regards

Hi Adam,
I think I may be in same position as you, my alarm does not close the windows however and whilst I found a couple of black boxes behind the bulkhead cover there was nothing that resembled what Anthony described and certainly nothing I felt confident of interfering with.
I guess that I will also have to trace wiring etc. if I find the motor functions OK when I take the panelling off the door.
I'm thinking of using an independent for next service called RS Porsche in Penarth nr.Cardiff, anybody had info on them.

Page 21 of your driver's manual shows how to operate window manually when electrics defective. Using special tool you will find in your toolbag lower window just a small distance and the electrics should function again . Well it does on my car. If successful , lubricate the window frame felt channel.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the motor sticking through lack of use, quite common on cars that get little use.

The specialist has had to 'free it up' at the last two services and I think they used a BFH to do so although they seem to be able to do it without removing the door trim.

They recommended that when parking the car just touch the switch to lower the window a smidgen to take some of the pressure off the motor.

I have just taken the motor housing out of the door, what a job dread putting a new one in as it is very awkward.
Tested motor directly across a battery and no joy, dead as a dodo. Checked switches on both doors, power ok; also checked power at terminal on the motor and power is there. Must be the motor

New motor from OPC £ 171 and nearly 2 week wait. Does anyone know if one can be bought direct from one of the manufacturers, say Bosch??? as need something cheaper if possible

Can they be reconditioned??

Comments appreciated

Update on above comments

After advice from mechanics at Strasse, I retested the old motor acrossa spare battery to find that it still works.
I then exchanged the switches from the passenger door with the switch for the driver's door window winder and all work as they should

I am now still perplexed as to what could be the problem, any new ideas please

Regards

Problem has been identified and bypassed. All along it was the alarm system which is a Sigma all closure Thatcham 1. Once the leads to the passenger door winder motor were disconnected the windows started working again, nothing wrong with the motor or switches.

Alarm and immobiliser still work but without the auto window closure, which is good enough until I get more info on how to sort the problem

Thanks for all the advice
Regards
