Electric windows stopped working -help

Need your help again. Only had car a week and already things going wrong.

Went to work this morning and windows worked fine, left off tonight and no switch would work at all. Swapped fuse - no joy (assuming its No.8 on upper fuse box like 924). Any ideas?

Also found out windscreen washer motor didn't work. Only passed MOT in March but didn' look like it has worked in yonks. Fortunately I swapped one off my 924. Beginning to think I'm jinxed with Porsche. Spotted an oil leak as well - not having a good day!

it might be the switch's themselfs, mine are playing up as well. Most of the time its quite easy to fix carefully remove and simply clean the contacts and bingo ! If they are totally lost then you might need to get ringing around scrap yards as this is usually the quickest way of getting new ones.

Guess I know what I'll be doing tomorrow - removing 4 door cards and swapping all the switches over in every conbination - does life get any more exciting?

You don't say which type and year your 944 is? If it's a post 85 oval dash model you dont have to remove the door cards. The switch panel itself is held on by two screws and provides easy access to swap the switches over [:D]

Good luck

Its a 1983 model where I do have to remove door cards.

No its not a 4 door! Mores the pity - I'd be able to sell it for a fortune! I have a 924 with the same switches, so if I swap them will know if its the switches themselves at fault.

Well, I would swap them over if it ever stops raining.

I really doubt all the switches went south at the same moment. Especially the passenger side as that typically has much less use.

Here is a link for the wiring diagrams for the pre-85.5 944.

For some reason I can't paste it in here. It is http://www.pelicanparts.com/944/electrical/944_electrical_diagrams.htm

Take a look at that. You are looking for a choke point to have failed that would take out all the switches' positive power.

I have an early round dash, I do not take the door cards off to remove switches.

Just pop out the surround with a blunt blade then take out the switch.

Both my windows failed at the same time, I fixed them by cleaning the contacts inside both drivers doors switches.

Thanks berg944, you're a star.

The switches will indeed come out with with a blunt instrument. On my 924 the surround has been glued to the door card - just assumed this with be the same with the 944. Still haven't got roung to fixing it but this info will make the job a lot easier. Cheers

Start by removing the drivers window switch

Put a test meter between each pin and a good earth with the ingnition on, if there is no power to any connection check the fuse.

If you have a live then try the other two switches with the drivers window.

If the switches dont work open them, dont lose the springs and take note of the position of both rockers.

Clean by scraping the contacts and spay with switch cleaner ( not WD40 )

Get them working with the drivers window first as you often require two good switches to get the passenger window working.
