Electrical fault- headlight bingo

Hello

I've recently bought a 996 facelift model , Tip , 79k, 2002.

If I turn on the headlights after starting the engine then one of three things happen;

1. The lights come on, and the battery and oil warning lights also come on

2. The lights come on , and the rear spoiler lifts up , and clicks as it reaches the up position and carries on trying to rise

3. The lights come on and all is good

If I turn the lights on before starting the engine, then all is good.

Any ideas?

Steve!!

It is likely to be either the ignition switch, or the main light switch. Both are known problems, which cause faults like you are experiencing. I would try the ignition switch first, as it is the cheaper of the two. There are DIY's for both in the Technical Articles section.

Thanks Richard

I bought the switch from VW ( £32 delivered) and set out to replace it.

I've removed the headlight switch then undone the three screws labelled 21 in the diagram.

I have tried to pull the vent towards me to remove it but it seems stuck fast. I've applied a fair amount of pull but I don't want to force it as I'll break something.

Are there any other hidden clips, springs etc - or should I try pushing it from inside , under the dash?

There may be no easy answer, I appreciate that.... each car is different and presents different problems.

Take a look at Min's headlight switch DIY. There aren't any hidden clips, but it does take a bit of firm but careful persuasion to get it moving.

HI Richard

Job done. The ignition switch failed to solve it so I have just replaced the light switch - much easier and quicker. It seems to have done the trick.

Thanks

Steve
